A fantastic night in Rockhampton connecting with our Central Queensland members, new graduates and local eye care colleagues.

It was wonderful to see so many conversations flowing, experiences being shared and new professional connections being made across the room.

A big thank you to Dr Andrew Laming, Ophthalmologist with the St John Eye Van, and Dr Nick Wong, GP Liaison Officer, for joining us and sharing valuable insights into collaboration, referral pathways and strengthening local connections across the eye care sector.

Thank you to everyone who came along and helped make the evening such an engaging and enjoyable one.

Final push: help us reach 50,000 signatures.

Optometry Australia supports Allied Health Professions Australia in calling for the Commonwealth Prac Payment to be expanded to include all allied health students, including optometry students.

More than 42,000 people have already signed the petition ahead of it being tabled in Parliament next week.

Optometry students complete extensive mandatory unpaid placements, often at significant personal cost. Expanding placement support is a practical step to reduce financial hardship, strengthen workforce sustainability and help ensure students can complete their training without unnecessary barriers.

Optometry Australia warmly congratulates early career optometrist Harrison Pike, who received the Emerging Leadership Award at the NATSIEHC26 Awards in May.

A proud Wiradjuri Ngemba man and the first Indigenous graduate from the Master of Optometry program at the University of Canberra, Harrison is committed to improving eye health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through culturally safe, patient-centred care.

Reflecting on the award, Harrison said the recognition reinforces his commitment to advocating for better eye health outcomes and contributing to lasting change for future generations.
