Around 3000 thoroughbreds are retired from the racing industry in Victoria each and every year. A handful of these horses who are sound enough to be rehomed as riding horses, are eligible for support via Racing Victoria’s retraining programmes.

However, there are no programmes in place to safeguard the most vulnerable ex-racehorses – those who have become injured during racing, are old and worn out, or mentally traumatised by their time in racing.

We see numerous ex-racehorses advertised as free give-aways every single day directly from the racetrack, or entered into auctions with no reserve price. Once these horses leave the industry, racing no longer take responsibility for their safety or welfare.

❗️Please get your priorities straight, Racing Victoria. Prizemoney boost or horse welfare❓

This morning at the Warrnambool jumps racing trials, Loch Gorman paid with his life for human entertainment and gambling. A volunteer captured the heartbreaking moments when his life was taken from him much too soon💔

Eight-year-old Loch Gorman had been raced since he was two, and he had suffered several racing injuries prior to the jumps trial today. Still, they chose to put his life further at risk.

Victoria is the only state in Australia that still permits the deadly jumps races, which are 20 times more dangerous than flat racing. In 2026, how can watching horrific deaths and suffering of horses still be regarded as entertainment?

Please let the Victorian Minister for Racing and Racing Victoria know what you think via the petition on our website.

The frequency of jumps races in Victoria is beginning to ramp up as they’re halfway through the 2026 season. Simultaneously, the list of jumps horses who are at particular risk of catastrophic injuries is growing.

Eight-year-old Bazini is one of these horses. Still, he has yet again been accepted into a steeplechase tomorrow Sunday, this time at Warrnambool. Another one is 11-year-old Count Zero, who, despite failing to finish due to lameness, is also being put further at risk in the steeplechase tomorrow.

Eight-year-old Castrofrancaru is also still active despite suffering lameness and exercise induced bleeding from the lungs. Seven-year-old Serious Black was put into his first jumps race last month and is still ‘spelling’ due to severe lameness.

Then there is – or was – seven-year-old Rapid Impact, who suffered lameness after a steeplechase on 7 April 2026 and was recorded ‘deceased’ ten days later on 17 April.

Please help end the suffering of jumps racing horses in Victoria💔

Following the recent news from Tasmania, Queensland will also be cutting back on race meetings in the next season👏

It is obviously a cost-cutting exercise although disguised as a way to ‘boost field sizes’ in a declining industry.

Both the number of race meetings and the number of horses being raced have declined since racing in Queensland restored back to its normal size in 2022/23 after the Covid lockdown.

Perhaps the cost-of-living crisis has made people reconsider the necessity of exploiting horses for entertainment and gambling on their lives.

One thing we know for sure, is that people are becoming increasingly aware that animals are sentient beings who deserve so much better than to be used as disposable commodities in profit driven industries.

Please keep saying every day of the year👏🐴🩷

Flying Animo was one of the thousands of racehorses who get injured on the racetrack every year in Australia. We know that many of these horses end up being killed as a result of these injuries at some point after they are taken off-track. But exactly how many remains unknown, because the publicly available Stewards Reports only note the deaths that happen on the track on race days.

Flying Animo, however, was one of those injured horses who we subsequently followed up on and hence, discovered that he had been killed following the injuries he sustained on the racetrack.

Thank you for not gambling on horses’ lives. Flying Animo and all the others deserved so much better.

The interest in exploiting horses for gambling and entertainment is fading, not least in Tasmania! TasRacing has been forced to follow the times and is preparing to cut further back on the number of race meetings in the next season – simply because there are not enough racehorses to fill the calendar, and not enough punters willing to bet on their lives: The demand is not there.

Last year (this racing year), TasRacing cancelled the entire racing season on King Island for the exact same reasons. According to the racing news site The Straight, it is unlikely that King Island races will return next year.

73 race meetings were held in Tasmania in the 24/25 season. This season the cancelled King Island meetings will bring the number down, and next season an expected further reduction by 5 meetings across the state.

Please keep speaking up for 🙏🩷❤️🧡

Even within the microscale Danish thoroughbred racing industry, the abuse of horses, corruption and drug use is endemic😫

While Denmark only runs around 250 races per year (in Australia it’s around 20,000), journalists only had to view a handful of veterinary invoices to expose systemic, illegal drug use to either manipulate the horses’ natural capacity to run or mask pain from injuries to enable racing of lame horses continuously💔

The mini documentary is in four parts and can be viewed for free with subtitles.

The pressure on racehorses is relentless. No wonder so many racehorses are mentally traumatised upon retirement from the track. Please do not enable this outdated spectacle. Say for the horses, every day of the year🙏
