Housing affordability has impacted many families across Australia. For newly arrived Muslim women and their children, this challenge is often greater, leaving many living in unsafe and unstable conditions, or facing homelessness.

Limited rental history, complex circumstances, language barriers, discrimination and complicated  application processes can make it incredibly difficult to secure a safe and suitable home.

AWMCHR recently supported a mother and her child, who has significant medical needs, after they had been living in housing that was not suitable for their circumstances. With limited English and no rental history in Australia, finding a suitable home felt impossible.

Through dedicated advocacy, practical support, and guidance throughout the rental process, we worked alongside the family to secure housing that met their needs. The result was more than housing, it was stability, reduced stress, and a safer, more supportive environment.

But many Muslim women and children are still waiting for that opportunity.

When housing is unsafe, overcrowded, or unsuitable, the impacts reach every part of life: children’s learning, family wellbeing, financial security, safety and
community connection.

Every woman and child deserves access to safe, stable, and suitable housing. As housing pressures continue to rise, we must ensure newly arrived families are not left behind.

Donate today via the link in our bio to help Muslim women and children access housing support, emergency relief, food vouchers, household essentials, and practical assistance when they need it most.

📍100% of your donations go directly to the families we support.

👉$2,000 can help a mother and her children pay a rental bond and secure stable housing.
👉$500 can provide food vouchers for women and children facing financial hardship.

Together, we can help Muslim women and children access the support they need to achieve long-term stability and independence.

Beyond the Headlines: Protecting the Rights and Futures of Children Returning from Syria.

There is an alarming media frenzy surrounding the return of Australian women and children from Syria. Sensationalist reporting and fear-mongering headlines are drowning out reason, distorting public perception, and putting children at risk of further harm. Amid this noise, it is critical that genuine efforts remain focussed on supporting the children’s recovery and wellbeing.

Rather than viewing the children primarily through the lens of public security or speculation about who they may become, the focus should be on the practical and compassionate measures needed to help them heal, rebuild their lives, and successfully integrate into Australian society through access to education, healthcare, community support, and social connection.

Our response cannot, and must not, be driven by political posturing or public outrage. It must be guided by our duty of care and our commitment to protecting children whose lives have been shaped by some of the most unstable and dangerous circumstances.

They must not bear the consequences of the adults around them. While the women will face the full legal consequences of their actions, their children require protection, stability, and care.

Leaving vulnerable children without support has lifelong consequences. Children who grow up without safety, stability, or hope face a far greater risk of ongoing harm and social exclusion. We cannot allow fear, assumptions, or political agendas to define their futures before they have had the chance to shape them for themselves.

The Australian Muslim Women’s Centre for Human Rights calls on the Australian Government to adopt a humane and measured approach to the care and re-settlement of these children. They have already endured prolonged trauma and displacement, experiences that can have serious long-term effects on mental health and development. Australia has both the capacity and the responsibility to ensure these harms are not compounded by neglect or stigma.

Every child deserves to grow up safe, nurtured, and given the opportunity to heal, thrive, and reach their full potential.

Do you work with Muslim communities? Are you looking to improve your cultural understanding, capability and confidence when working with your clients, students or community group?

Australia’s Muslim community has a unique and diverse profile, shaped by migration, faith, culture, and history. At AMWCHR, we draw on over 35 years of direct community experience to deliver training that reflects that complexity.

Whether you work in family violence, support young Muslim women, or want to strengthen your organisation’s cultural competency more broadly, our modules are tailored to your team’s specific needs.

Participants will leave equipped to:

📍Navigate the relationship between religion and culture in practice
📍Apply foundational knowledge of Islam to their work
📍Understand the impact of migration and settlement on Muslim clients
📍Identify systemic barriers that prevent Muslim communities from accessing services

If you would like to discuss your training needs, please contact us by emailing: [email protected] or call (03) 9481 3000.

In the final days of Ramadan, your support matters.

Thank you to everyone who has supported, shared, and donated so far - your generosity is truly making an impact in the lives of those who need it most.

Donations go directly to Muslim women and children who can’t afford food, can’t keep a roof over their heads, and are trying to rebuild their lives with very little support around them.

Your generosity provides practical support, helping families secure safe housing, access essentials, and build pathways toward independence.

What your support makes possible:

📍Rent relief and housing establishment
📍Food and essential household items
📍Emergency financial support
📍Practical pathways to long-term independence, including driver’s licence access and education participation

🩵 Behind Every Donation

Starting over in a new country is overwhelming. For Fatima and her family, arriving in Australia as Gazan refugees meant navigating unfamiliar systems in housing, education, healthcare, and employment, all while managing the uncertainty of building a new life from the ground up.

With the support of AMWCHR, they didn’t have to do it alone. From emergency food,  furniture and assistance with bills, they received the practical support they needed to find their footing and build toward independence.

“We felt respected, valued, and supported. We are especially grateful for the help with community integration, as well as the assistance with food, finances, furniture, and even driving lessons. We could not have done this without your guidance and kindness.”

Fatima’s family is one of many. Behind every donation is a story like theirs.

This Ramadan, your support can make that difference for another family - providing practical, urgent assistance to Muslim women and children facing food insecurity and housing instability.

📌Your donation will directly contribute to:

• Emergency food and essential items
• Rent relief and housing support
• Furniture and white goods
• Utility bills and urgent living expenses
• Driving lessons and settlement support

This year’s International Women’s Day theme, ‘Balance the Scales’, reminds us that equality is not achieved through words alone. It requires systems that protect all women equally.

Across the world, within our communities in Afghanistan, Iran, Lebanon, Pakistan, Palestine, and Sudan, women continue to navigate conflict, repression, and political instability that systematically undermine their safety and rights. Too often, their suffering is reduced to political talking points, while others decide what these women need, what their liberation should look like, and whether their lives warrant urgency.

At the same time, we are troubled by what is unfolding closer to home. Public discourse has increasingly created conditions where Muslim women are exposed to targeted Islamophobia, placing their safety and sense of belonging at risk. Through our work with community, we see the real impact this has on the lives of Muslim women and young women navigating violence and unsafety.

When systems fail to recognise cultural realities, overlook lived experiences, or respond with misunderstanding and bias, women are left facing additional barriers when seeking safety and support.

Too often, we are forced to prove that our women matter.

To prove that women who look like us matter.

To prove that when Muslim and migrant women speak about the harm they endure, they deserve to be believed.

This burden should not fall on us, our rights are not up for debate.

This International Women’s Day, we call for public conversations grounded in the inclusion of all women. Balancing the scales requires community-led solutions and a shared, unwavering commitment to justice for all.

Condemnation Cannot Be Selective: Addressing the Climate of Fear Facing Australian Muslims

We are not surprised by the recent reports regarding the accused terror plot in Western Australia. Our community has been holding its breath, fearing that the constant vilification and escalation in rhetoric would eventually translate into something far more dangerous.

We see the swift and overwhelming condemnation directed at the accused. What we have not seen, with the same urgency or consistency, is condemnation of the broader environment that has allowed hostility and Islamophobia toward our community to grow unchecked. The relentless news cycles that repeatedly associate our community, our religion, our women, our men and our children with suspicion and threat have real-world consequences.

We have not seen equal scrutiny of the policies and policing powers that have allowed our community to be disrupted during sacred prayers and peaceful protests. We have not seen strong and unequivocal messages of support from our Prime Minister, nor clear additional protections announced by premiers to reassure Australian Muslims that our safety is a priority.

Condemnation cannot be selective. Accountability cannot be conditional. Media outlets and politicians who promote false narratives, fuel fear, or amplify harmful stereotypes must also be held responsible for the climate of fear they help create.

The Muslim community in Australia has continuously faced persistent and harmful forms of Islamophobia. This hostility does not exist in a vacuum, it is shaped and emboldened by the narratives that dominate public discourse.

Our community deserves safety, dignity and protection. As well as leaders who take accountability, publicly acknowledge the fears of Muslim communities and ultimately stand up for their rights as they do for countless others.
