Who we are
We are women from all over Syria, previously unknown to one another, who have had the good fortune to meet in Melbourne. We love living in Australia but know first-hand the barriers that newly arrived migrants and refugees face and need to overcome to effectively engage in education, employment, the community, and social networks. Following the success of a recent crowdfunding campaign, we realized the need to create a formal structure to manage and support future activities and events for Arabic speaking women of Victoria In mid-2021, with the support of local friends and the Arabic Welfare service, we formed a committee, founded a charity, and undertook training. Australian Citizenship Training program for Arabic women
Our new venture is a big commitment, but there is a lot we want to achieve. Volunteers have begun assisting Arabic speaking women prepare for their citizenship tests using the resource booklet Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond. We review one chapter each session, reading first in English, then in Arabic. Our lessons arenβt sophisticated but the group is so enthusiastic about learning about Australia, that they meet online each Saturday evening. Fundraising
There is more we want to do including fundraising for those still struggling with the effects of conflict and the pandemic in Syria. Back in Melbourne, Syrian refugees are enrolled in courses, working, making friends, bringing up children and giving back to the community. Our Australian friends tell us how much they are enjoying the social reciprocity of sharing food, fun and friendship. Our Mission
To support migrant and refugee women from Arabic backgrounds to connect to social, education, and employment networks that empower them to enjoy meaningful lives in Australia. Our Vision
To support women from Arabic speaking backgrounds to flourish and thrive in Australia.
