Beach Patrol Australia

Beach Patrol Australia We are a network of volunteer groups that clean local beaches, streets and open spaces in Victoria. We also partner with corporate and school groups.

Our aim is to raise awareness on the issue of plastic pollution. About us -
Beach Patrol Australia is about involving the local community to remove litter from their local beach and in the process promote litter awareness in the general public. Apart from the the environmental aspects, one of the key aims is to strengthen communities and provide a social outlet for people who share the same intere

st in caring for their environment. Beach Patrol Australia supports the creation and ongoing operation of a number of individual beach clean up groups centred around a particular beachside suburb. History -
The concept of the postcode-centric Beach Patrols to organise monthly community beach litter collections was founded with the 3206 Beach Patrol (Albert/Middle Park, Victoria). This 3206 group was very successful in engaging the Middle Park and Albert Park community in looking after their beach and heightening the visibility of the litter problem in our bay and on our beaches. This concept was successfully expanded upon by Beach Patrol Australia resulting the creation of many groups around Port Phillip. In action -
The each Beach Patrol group operates a litter collection on their local beach and foreshore for one hour each month. All members wear shirts in the group's chosen colour and bearing the group's own logo. This draws in passers-by and beach users, highlighting the group’s presence and what is it doing. All litter collected is weighed and the stats from each clean up is recorded on the Beach Patrol Australia website. There is a strong social element with groups having a coffee together afterwards and sometimes a BBQ or group birthday celebration, plus most groups have there own pages.

Plastic bottle tops are a highly littered item. They are everywhere. Yes a simple solution will stop this. Tether the top to the bottle like they do in the EU. A simple and very low cost option that can be implemented fast and easily. We don’t have it here and the governments are not talking about it. But it is inevitable it will come, just when. This is a petition to get the message to the Victorian government that we need this introduced.

If these bait manufacturers would put their products In resealable containers then we would not see images like this. 1/2 filled bags dumped on the ground as the fishermen don’t want to put these smelly open bags in their car.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Two months ago, for on September 20th, volunteers from several organisations came together across 25 locations and collected nearly 30,000 butts from the environment.

🚬 Cigarette butts are the most littered item in our beautiful country. We can not keep cleaning up this mess.

⚕️ Doctors for the Environment Australia have confirmed: Cigarette filters do not make smoking safer.

🏛️ The Belgian Superior Health Council has called for a ban and the World Health Organization has called for a ban. At the recent Plastics Treaty negotiations, around 100 countries indicated support for a phase out (of plastic filters).

☣️ Cigarette filters are a deceptive, single-use, problematic, unnecessary and avoidable plastic.

📣 We call on the Australian government and the health and environment Ministers from all states and territories to take a bold action and ban the butt.

‼️ There’s no more butts.

are coming to Australia. Piece meal however which will slow down the progress of adopting this important change to drink bottles to stop the lids being littered.
From NSW government today:
The NSW Plastics Plan 2.0 draws on a suite of approaches including phase-outs, new design standards, and other requirements to reduce waste, increase reuse and recycling, and prevent plastic pollution.
The NSW Plastics Plan 2.0 will:
• ban lighter than air balloon releases next year
• phase out plastic bread tags and pizza savers by 2027
• phase out non-compostable fruit and vegetable stickers by 2030
• introduce tethered lids for plastic bottles by 2030
How much longer do we have to want till other states implement these too???
