Sailability Bayside

Sailability Bayside Sailing for people with disability during Queensland school terms. In the past 12 months, some 4000 people with disability have enjoyed this sailing experience.

Who we are:
Sailability Bayside is an all-volunteer organisation and part of Sailability World Inc in affiliation with Sailability Australia and Sailability Queensland. Sailability Bayside commenced in June 2003 with three borrowed dinghies that were launched on an old trailer at the boat ramp sited at the now Darling Point Sailing Squadron. We are entirely self funded, relying on our own fund rai

sing, donations from clients, grants from government sources, and donations from business and community service organizations. What we do:
Sailability Bayside provides a sailing opportunity for people with all types and levels of disability in order to bring pleasure, encourage development and provide a broader life experience. Our clients come from various Disability Service Organisations or as private individuals, and they are normally accompanied by a carer who has responsibility for their welfare ashore. We operate 15 Access 303 sailing dinghies and a 7.4m Payne yacht named ‘Faith’, all of which have been designed specifically for the disabled and have great stability. Sailing Days:
Sailing days are Monday and Thursday of the state school term and excluding public holidays. Bookings are essential and are required at the start of each school term. Please contact the registrars at [email protected] to make bookings. Weather conditions may cause cancellation of the day’s sailing. A call to mobile phone number 0401994271 after 7am each sailing day will confirm that sailing operations are being conducted or have been cancelled. Sailing commences at about 9.00 am and continues until about 2pm. Venue:
Darling Point Sailing Squadron premises, 22 Trafalgar Street, Manly. (next to the Coastguard)

Volunteers:
People of all ages and backgrounds volunteer with Sailability Bayside many are of post retirement age though we also have younger stay at home people with school age children. Our active volunteers number around 90 persons at this time and come from a wide variety of backgrounds that gel into an energetic, harmonious, reliable group. Around 30 volunteers are required to operate a sailing day for an average of 80 clients, who are collectively from around 22 disability service organisations, state special schools, the PA Hospital Spinal Injuries Unit or are private individuals. Volunteering with Sailability Bayside requires you to be eligible for the Government “Blue Card”, though there is no cost to a volunteer in gaining this card. Our volunteers are a friendly happy bunch who will guide you into a suitable role even if you have no previous experience with either disabilities or sailing. A willingness to help others is the prime requisite. Should you wish to secure more information, our President Geoff, can be contacted during office hours on 0432 152 310.

Monday 25th May and it was great to be back on the water after a number of cancelled sailing days. The weather was not the best, with some showers trying to frighten us away, but we stood fast and braved the elements to finish another fantastic sailing experience. Some 87 happy faces by the end of the session which gave our volunteers a substantial lift as we were rather short on hands today. Thank You so much to those who stretched their resources to ensure everyone had a fun time. Look at the photos and you will see that a shower occurred during our briefing with the rainbow ending in the heart of our volunteers.

I AM THE DISABLED CHILD.....

I AM THE CHILD WHO CANNOT TALK. You often pity me. I see it in your eyes. You wonder how much I am aware of…I see that as well. I am aware of much…whether you are happy or sad or fearful, patient or impatient, full of love and desire, or if you are just doing your duty to me. I marvel at your frustration, knowing mine to be far greater- for I cannot express myself nor my needs as you do. You cannot conceive my isolation- so complete it is at times. I do not gift you with clever conversation or cute remarks to be laughed over and repeated. I do not give you answers to your everyday questions, responses over my well-being, share my needs, or comments about the world around me. I do not give you rewards as defined by the WORLD’S standards…great strides in development that you can credit yourself. I do not give you understanding as you know it.

What I give you is so much more valuable… I give you instead opportunities: Opportunities to discover the depth of your character- not mine; the depth of your love, your commitment, your patience, your abilities; the opportunity to explore your spirit more deeply than you imagined possible. I drive you further than you will ever go on your own, working harder, seeking answers to your many questions- creating questions with no answers. I AM THE CHILD WHO CANNOT TALK.

I AM THE CHILD WHO CANNOT WALK. The world sometimes seems to pass me by. You see the longing in my eyes to get out of this chair- to run and play like other children. There is much you take for granted. I want the toys on the top shelf. I need to go to the bathroom…oh…I’ve dropped my spoon again! I am dependent on you in these ways. My gift to you is to make you aware of your great fortune: your healthy back and legs, your ability to do for yourself. Sometimes people appear not to notice me- I always notice them. I feel not so much envy as desire; to stand upright, to put one foot in front of the other, to be independent. I give you awareness. I AM THE CHILD WHO CANNOT WALK.

I AM THE CHILD WHO IS MENTALLY IMPAIRED. I don’t learn easily if you judge me by the WORLD’S measuring stick. What I do know is infinite joy in the simple things. I am not burdened as you are with the strifes and conflicts or a more complicated life. My gift to you is to grant you the freedom to enjoy things as a child: to teach you how much it means to have your arms around me- to give you love. I give you the gift of simplicity. I AM THE CHILD WHO IS MENTALLY IMPAIRED.

I AM THE DISABLED CHILD. I am your teacher. If you allow me- I will teach you what is really important in life. I will give you and teach you, unconditional love. I give you my innocent trust- my dependency upon you. I teach you respect for others and their uniqueness. I teach you about the sanctity of life. I teach you about how very precious life is and about not taking things for granted. I teach you about forgetting your own needs and desires and dreams. I teach you giving. Most of all, I teach you, Hope and Faith.

I AM THE DISABLED CHILD
