Bilbies aren’t just cute, they’re busy rebuilding Australia while most of us sleep.
Each night, bilbies dig, forage and turn over the earth. As ecosystem engineers, their digging helps aerate the soil and creates places where water, nutrients and seeds can collect, supporting healthier habitats for many other species.
But introduced predators, habitat loss and changed fire regimes have pushed bilbies out of much of their former range.
National Bilby Day is a reminder that protecting one species can help protect the relationships holding an entire ecosystem together.
