Happy Father's/ Father Figures / Loved Ones Day

Today we celebrate the incredible role that fathers, father figures, and loved ones play in the lives of children.

We also acknowledge that Father's Day can bring a mix of emotions. For some, today may be a source of grief or sadness, and we remember those who may no longer be here with us to celebrate.

Every family is unique and that families come in all shapes and sizes, what is universal to families is love, care, connection and community.

However, you choose to celebrate today, playgroups can be a valuable source of connection, support, and belonging for all family members. They provide opportunities to share the joys and challenges of parenting and build your village.

For dads and father figures looking to connect with others, Play Matters Australia offers welcoming spaces to share experiences, learn from one another, and enjoy quality time with your children.

Today is the 60th anniversary of the Wave Hill Walk Off

In 1966, Gurindji stockmen, domestic workers and their families walked off Wave Hill Station, led by Vincent Lingiari, in a stand for fair wages, better conditions and, ultimately, land rights. The Gurindiji people set up a camp at Daguragu for nearly 9 years (also known as Wattie Creek), requesting the government return some of their land.

The Gurindji strike helped to make the Australian public aware of First Nations land ownership claims. It also influenced the first legislation in Australia that allowed First Nations peoples to apply for ownership of their traditional lands, the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976.

Stories like the Wave Hill Walk-Off are an important part of our history, and music can be a powerful way to share them with children.

Paul Kelly's 'From Little Things, Big Things Grow' tells the Gurindji story and helps bring history to life, creating opportunities to talk about courage, fairness, respect and the importance of standing up for what is right.

National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day | 4 August

Today, we celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and the strength, pride and identity that come from connection to family, culture, community and Country.

This year's Children's Day theme, Living Our Truth, highlights the importance of truth-telling and sharing stories, knowledge and culture across generations. It recognises the vital role of Elders, families and communities have in nurturing children to grow up strong and confident in who they are.

At Play Matters, our Reconciliation Action Plan guides our commitment to creating culturally safe, welcoming and inclusive spaces where all children and families feel seen, respected and valued. We recognise that play is a powerful way to build connection, celebrate culture, and support every child to develop a strong sense of belonging.

We have meaningful partnerships with, and led by, community - guided by children's voices, that shape our programs to be responsive to culture and place.

As we mark Children's Day, we reaffirm our commitment to listening, learning and walking alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to help create a future where all children can thrive, connected to their identities, cultures and communities. 💛🖤❤️
