Invitation to join the Past & Present (History+) Writers’ Group

Now Open to all Genres

Founded in 2022 in Victoria, the History Writers’ Group meets on the fourth Sunday of each month at Waurn Ponds Library in Geelong. Originally focused on history, memoir, historical fiction, and biography, the group is now expanding to welcome writers from non-fiction genres.

Our sessions explore the craft of writing—research techniques, storytelling, editing, and publishing—skills relevant across all forms of writing. Meetings include sharing experiences, practical insights, and constructive feedback, along with presentations on topics such as plot development, synopsis, and self-publishing.
We are a supportive and diverse group, from beginners to experienced authors. Members have achieved publication, festival performances, and ongoing writing projects.

If you’re passionate about history or non-fiction writing and eager to grow, we warmly invite you to join us.

To celebrate the Winter Solstice, writers this month are being challenged to respond to a word (not an image).

NADIR

Further, the submitted work must be exactly 182 words (excluding title), this being the number of days between the winter and summer solstices. In addition to submitting their work in the usual format, writers, if they wish, can create a video of themselves reading their work, post it to their social media and include their handle when submitting their work. Geelong Writers will then share those videos on its social media feeds. Something a bit different and hopefully a bit of fun.

Submissions close on 19 June 2026 and will be published on 20 June 2026.

Good luck! And have fun!

Microfiction Mondays!
On Mondays at Geelong Cereal, we will publish a collection of microfiction (up to 300 words). The topic is up to you – the style and form are up to you too! Two Sentence Horror seem to be popular at the moment!
How many Mondays per month this is published depends on submissions, and volunteers.
Geelong Cereal is all about creating a fun and encouraging space for local writers to try their hand at different forms of writing, and have it published in our free digital magazine.
So often I hear people say 'I want to write but I don't have time'.
I challenge you to start small – write one microfiction piece per week and send it to us! We'll be thrilled to publish it.
Make sure you check out the submission guidelines and FAQ on the website, and remember to subscribe to participate- it's free!

Attention Poets

Geelong Writers is now accepting submissions to naXOs, its 2026 poetry publication.

naXOs is a Geelong Writers publication of resonant, experimental, contemporary poetry. It is a new publication that evolves from our previous poetry publication, AnoMaly Street. Our new publication seeks and encourages poetry that plays and that makes new, unexpected connections through structure, language and images.

Through Geelong Writers' naXOs publication we commit to poetry from Geelong, Bellarine and the Surf Coast, unceded lands inhabited for thousands of years by the Wadawurrung peoples. We give deference to the voices of all peoples who live on the edge of sea and land.

We are accepting submissions from Geelong Writers members as well as non-members. A $10 submission fee applies to non-members.

Guidelines and the submission portal can be found at:

https://www.geelongwriters.org.au/naxos/

Submissions close 31 May 2026.

Please contact [email protected] if you have any queries.

We look forward to reading submission.
