This time 10 years ago the North Geelong Community Big Band was being born out of a series of Learn Local music courses that had been running. As we entered 2017 we decided to start the process of formally bringing together a band that welcomed musicians of all abilities to music. Many returning after putting down their instruments when they left school. We recruited through Open Mics initially and as interest developed we began to scope grants for equipment.
We do it a little differently from many community bands, all our charts are crafted by Ian Burrowes, our creative director. We don't rely on any single instrument to carry a song, the arrangements easily adapt to the line-up we have, meaning we can shrink and grow and still play most of our repertoire. Ian also writes to shine a light on all players and is not daunted by exotic instruments in his arrangements.
We welcome new and returning musicians. Be curious and join us from 6.30pm every Thursday during term.
