Attention Community Members,

Award nominations close this Friday, and at this stage we have received very few. With such low numbers, we are having to consider whether the awards section of our NAIDOC Dinner Dance is still something the community wants.

As we are communityโ€‘led, your input guides what we do. If these awards matter to you, please consider sending in your nominations before Friday.

You can nominate someone here.

FRANKSTON/MORNINGTON PENINSULA NAIDOC AWARDS

NOMINATIONS ARE OPEN!

We have become aware of speculation circulating in our community that the Nairm Marr Djambana NAIDOC Awards process is rigged. We want to address this directly and with respect.

Our process is transparent and independent:

Nominations are received by one Administration staff member only and remain confidential until the closing date.

Once nominations close, all applications are compiled and sent to an external Aboriginal organisation or an Aboriginal Team within a non-Aboriginal Organisation to assess and select recipients based solely on the merits of each nomination.

The NMD Board, Management and Staff have no role in selecting winners. We take great pride in honouring our community's extraordinary people.

These Awards belong to the community, and the integrity of this process matters deeply to us.

If you have questions about how the Awards work, please contact us directly at [email protected] or [email protected]

CELEBRATING MABO DAY

Today we honour the courage and legacy of Eddie Koiki Mabo โ€” a proud Meriam man from Mer (Murray Island) in the Torres Strait, whose decade-long fight changed the course of Australian history.

On this day in 1992, the High Court of Australia delivered a landmark ruling in Mabo v Queensland (No 2), overturning the legal fiction of terra nullius โ€” the colonial claim that this land belonged to no one. It recognised, for the first time in Australian law, that First Nations peoples held rights to their traditional lands that existed long before colonisation, and in many cases, continued to exist.

Heartbreakingly, Eddie never heard that decision. He passed away just five months before the ruling was handed down. But his fight lives on.

The Mabo decision led directly to the Native Title Act 1993 โ€” and it affirmed what First Nations peoples have always known: this land was never empty, its peoples were never invisible, and the connection to Country endures.
