Congratulations to Aleacia Lawtey, winner of the Alfred Murfey Prize for her work Pieces of Me. 🎨
Created using acrylic paint and Posca markers on canvas, this deeply personal portrait explores Aleacia’s experience of disability not as one defining feature, but as many interconnected parts of who she is.
Inspired by Andy Warhol’s bold use of colour and simplified form, each plane represents a different part of Aleacia’s life — the physical challenges she experiences, the emotions that come with loss and limitation, and the dreams, interests and aspirations that continue to shape her as a young woman.
Her wheelchair and diagnosis of Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia are present in the work, but they are only part of the story.
So too are creativity, determination, connection and possibility.
Daisy, nestled beside her in the portrait, represents companionship and the wider network of family, friends, carers, therapists and medical professionals who support Aleacia in pursuing greater participation and independence.
Perhaps the most powerful message in Pieces of Me is this:
The different pieces do not divide her.
Together, they make the whole person.
A beautiful and deeply thoughtful work by Aleacia Lawtey, age 20. 💙
