Some of the best Australia Day celebrations start with a simple idea.

A BBQ.
A fun run.
A flag ceremony.
A family day.
A celebration of culture and community.

The Australia Day Council NT is offering grants of up to $3,000 to help NT communities bring their Australia Day ideas to life in 2027.

Your event must be free, inclusive, held in the Northern Territory and recognise or celebrate Australia Day.

Last night our 2026 NT Australian of the Year Dr Felix Ho ASM OAM attended an investiture ceremony at Government House where he was officially awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for service to community health.
Congratulations Felix and thank you for everything you do to make the Northern Territory a better place 🙏

📣Australia Day Community Grants are now open.
If you are a council or community group holding an event two weeks either side of 26 January, you can apply for up to $3,000 for your event.

2026 Senior Australian of the Year Professor Brodaty AO made a very quick trip to Darwin this week, joining our OZ Forum panel on Monday and the delivering a keynote speech at our annual Senior’s Morning Tea event on Tuesday.

Professor Henry was joined by 2026 NT Young Australian of the Year nominee Lila Tonkin and Allan McGill AM for OZ Forum, all speakers sharing their own expertise and experiences with dementia.

There were lots of great questions from the audience at both events, with guests taking away some very important messages.

Here are Professor Henry’s four key points on dementia prevention:

💪🏽 Physical Health - get puffed and sweaty and do a mixture of strength and balance as well as cardiovascular training.

🥩 Nutrition - Follow a Mediterranean style diet rich in vegetables, legumes, and nuts. Use extra-virgin olive oil and limit red meat, sweets, ultra-processed foods, and excess alcohol.

👬 Social Health - people who are socially connected have a low rate of depression. Join a walking group or a senior’s groups or find a community group to volunteer with.

🎸 Education - Keeping our brains active. It’s never too late to learn an instrument or language later in life.
