🎃👻 Happy Halloween from NTIA! 🇮🇪💚

Whether you're dressing up the little monsters, handing out sweets, carving pumpkins or keeping the curtains closed and pretending nobody's home… we hope you have a frightfully good Halloween!

Here in the Top End, we're celebrating a tradition with some seriously Irish roots.

Long before Halloween became the spooky celebration we know today, our ancestors in Ireland marked Samhain, the ancient festival signalling the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter. Here in the Top End, we're heading into the Wet instead, which is a lovely reminder that wherever the Irish go, we somehow manage to find weather to complain about! 😂🇮🇪🌧️

From carving turnips into lanterns to telling ghost stories and playing traditional Halloween games, many of the customs we enjoy today have travelled across generations and oceans, carried by Irish people wherever they settled. 🇮🇪

So tonight, as the little ones head out trick-or-treating and the sweet stash mysteriously disappears, spare a thought for the Irish traditions behind it all!

From all of us at the Northern Territory Irish Association, we wish you and your families a safe, happy and spooktacular Halloween. 🦇🎃

And remember, if anyone asks where all the sweets went… we know nothing. Absolutely nothing. 🤫😂

🎃🇮🇪 A Little Halloween Fun, the Irish Way!

With Halloween just around the corner, it's time to get the wee ones involved! Before the shops were full of plastic skeletons and pumpkins cost a small fortune, our Irish ancestors had their own ways of celebrating.

And some of them sound like they'd keep the adults entertained too! 😂

🍎 Snap Apple: Apples were hung from strings or floated in water, and the challenge was to catch one using only your teeth. Easier said than done, especially with an audience!

🥣 Apple Bobbing: A basin of water, a few floating apples and a lot of splashing. A Halloween classic that has kept generations of children busy, and parents reaching for the towels. In my house Mammy would throw some whole peanuts in there or if we were really lucky some coins 😂.

🍰 Barmbrack Fortune-Telling: This traditional Irish fruit loaf was sometimes baked with little charms hidden inside, each believed to predict something about the finder’s future. A ring was associated with marriage. Halloween fortune-telling with your afternoon cuppa!

🌞 Halloween Suncatchers
Turn your windows into a colourful Halloween display with pumpkins, ghosts, bats and spiders made from tissue paper. Lovely when the Top End sunshine shines through, and a good excuse to get the craft supplies out!

🧪 Halloween Slime
Green monster slime, orange pumpkin slime or something suitably ghastly! Let the kids mix up their own spooky creations. It might keep them entertained for a while, although we make no promises about the state of the kitchen afterwards. 😂

🏮 Homemade Halloween Lanterns
Here's one with an Irish connection! Before pumpkins became the Halloween favourite, people in Ireland carved turnips into lanterns. Make a child-friendly version using a clean jar, coloured tissue paper and spooky faces, then pop a battery-operated tea light inside for a lovely Halloween glow.

🚨🐊 BREAKING NEWS FROM THE CROC RACE COMMITTEE: After reviewing the video evidence, Brutus, led by Ronan Mackey, has been disqualified for literally falling apart under pressure! 😂💀 The title is therefore awarded to Sweetheart, led by Lisa, who is officially crowned the croc racing champion! 🏆🐊 We thank Ronan for his participation and Brutus for… well, giving it his best until he didn’t. 🤣

A massive go raibh maith agat (thank you!) to all the businesses that made our day out on Saturday possible. 💚 You all went above and beyond to make it such a special day for our Irish community! 🇮🇪☘️

And a huge thank you to our NTIA committee, who put so much time and effort into organising events throughout the year for us all to sit back, enjoy and connect with one another. Your hard work is truly appreciated and helps give us that little slice of home on the other side of the world. 🥹💚

🦇 Halloween is nearly here, so let's talk about Dracula... and Dublin! 🇮🇪

With the Bram Stoker Festival taking place in Dublin from 23–26 October, it's the perfect time to remember the Irish man behind one of the world's most famous horror stories.

Bram Stoker was born in Dublin in 1847. He later moved to London, where he worked as a theatre manager, but it was his imagination that gave the world Dracula, published in 1897.

Not a bad contribution to literature from a Dublin lad!

Interestingly, Stoker's famous vampire wasn't simply a case of dreaming up a scary character and throwing a cape on him. The novel drew on Gothic fiction, contemporary fears and folklore, helping create the vampire mythology that still fills our books, films and television screens today.

The Bram Stoker Festival celebrates his legacy with four days of gothic arts, storytelling, performances and Halloween events across Dublin. There's even family-friendly entertainment for the younger crowd, should your little ones fancy a day out with a few monsters.

And while Dracula belongs to the world of Gothic fiction, Ireland's fascination with the supernatural goes back much further, to centuries of folklore and the ancient festival of Samhain.

Not bad for a Dublin lad. His imagination has kept the world spooked for well over a century! 🦇🇮🇪

Oh what a night ! The 2026 NT Irish Association Pub Crawl was an awesome night as we brought the Irish ☘️ craic, far and wide, as we toured the rural pubs of the Darwin Region.

Many thanks to Howard Springs Tavern, Berry Springs Tavern, Darwin River Tavern, Noonamah Tavern & Rodeo for you true-blue Aussie hospitality. Really appreciated the discounts, freebies and live music at all the venues. Virginia Tavern you will be our first stop next time.

Also a huge shout out Grand Touring NT and Brazilian ‘Mick’ who was a fantastic and fun bus 🚌 driver, we want him again, next time!

But most especially thank you our NT Irish members & guests and the non-members who joined us, your singing, 🎶 dancing, 🕺, human crocodile 🐊 racing, pe***ng!! And absolute ability to have the craic is what it’s all about.
