Our thoughts are with communities across the Top End as we face this major flooding event.

These events remind us how powerful and unpredictable our big rivers can be, and how closely our communities are connected to them.

Please stay safe, follow local emergency guidance, and look after each other as recovery begins. Together we can protect both our rivers and the people who live alongside them.

This week Adele and Thor met with Suki Dorras-Walker, Greens Candidate for Nightcliff and discussed the importance of healthy coasts and rivers for our economy, local tourism jobs, and marine life.

Please see Suki's statement below:

“I am proud to support the Keep Top End Coasts Healthy. The Top End’s coasts and rivers are precious tropical ecosystems. We need clear action to protect Darwin Harbour and our coasts, reduce plastic pollution, keep our rivers free-flowing, and ban fracking and new fossil fuel projects. Decisions must be made with communities and Traditional Owners, not behind closed doors. Nightcliff has voted to do politics differently, and I am ready to hold the major parties accountable and keep Nightcliff green.” - Suki Dorras-Walker, Greens Candidate for Nightcliff

Remember, we are non-partisan and will never tell you who to vote for. But we will acknowledge commitments by candidates to protect our coasts.

The federal government has given the green light for the bulldozing of nearly 3,000 hectares of tropical savanna in the Northern Territory without an assessment under Australia’s nature laws.

The planned development would clear 2,723 hectares of woodland – an area 10 times the size of Sydney’s CBD – on Claravale tation in the Daly River region for crops, including sorghum and cotton.

The decision effectively green lights the destruction of likely habitat for 13 threatened species, including Gouldian finches, freshwater sawfish, pig-nosed turtles, red goshawks and ghost bats.

Vote 1 ghost bat!

The ghost bat (Macroderma gigas) is Australia's only carnivorous bat, living in large colonies in northern QLD, WA and the NT.

But these fascinating creatures are threatened by land clearing projects, which could destroy their habitat and disturb whole colonies alongside our Top End rivers.

As part of National Science Week, ABC Science want you to vote for Australia's most underrated animal - and what better way to stand up for NT rivers than voting for the ghost bat?

Vote for the ghost bat: https://www.abc.net.au/news/science/2025-08-01/science-week-underrated-australian-animal-vote/105582104
