Mental Illness Fellowship of Australia NT

Mental Illness Fellowship of Australia NT Friends and family members who care for people with mental illness do a remarkable job, and significantly contribute, often without thanks, to our community.

Mental Illness Fellowship of Australia NT is a not-for profit, non-government organisation, committed to supporting people living with a mental illness and their family and friends. Statistically, Carers are more likely to suffer deterioration in their own physical and mental health, due to their 24-7 devotion to the person they care for. Unfortunately, โ€œburn outโ€ for Carers is a common scenario.

Community support through planned respite, peer support groups, one-on-one support and education have all been shown to be effective services to help support Carers to continue doing what they do best. We have an Individual Recovery Program for consumers. Our aim is to increase the opportunities for recovery for people whose lives are affected by mental illness by assisting a person to identify & develop their goals & strengths, we then work alongside the person to assist them to achieve those goals & assist the participant to help them overcome social isolation and increase their connections within the community by increasing the participants personal capacity and self reliance. We also run two recreational programs for people living with a mental illness. Mi Place is a drop in and activities center, running every weekday, which provides lunch and a great sense of community. The Cool Program runs in conjunction to Mi Place and offers recreational activities Tuesdays weekly and Saturdays fortnightly.

Creativity, collaboration, and community connection were on full display at MiPlace Hub! ๐ŸŒป

Our participants channeled their focus and fine motor skills into building beautiful Lego sunflowers. Once the sunflowers were built, the creativity kept going! Participants carefully cut and shaped styrofoam blocks to secure the stems perfectly inside their display pots so they can brighten up our common area.

We also welcomed participants from CAAPS Aboriginal Corporation, who joined us for an origami session. The table was buzzing with energy, laughter, and great conversations as everyone learned new folding techniques together.

A huge thank you to everyone who brought their energy, smiles, and dedication to MiPlace Hub. Our space is all about providing a welcoming environment where people can connect over shared activities and learn new skills.

Come and see what our programs are about! Doors are open Monday to Friday, 9:30 am to 1:00 pm.

This is what mental recovery looks like on a Thursday morning, an origami workshop at MiPlace Hub.

Sitting around a table, following the folds, sharing a laugh over the wonky ones, and leaving with something you made yourself. Research consistently shows that structured creative activity reduces anxiety, supports cognitive engagement, and builds the kind of peer connection that clinical settings rarely replicate.

MiPlace Hub is designed to be a safe space not only during challenging times, but as a consistent community fixture for connection and personal empowerment.

We run MiPlace Program Monday to Friday, 9:30am to 1:00pm at 2/273 Bagot Road, Coconut Grove.

MIFANT partnered with Akeyulerre to deliver Just FLO - Figuring Life Out Holistic Wellbeing Program in Alice Springs. It is a workshop built around creativity, connection, and building resilience together in a culturally safe space.

The day kicked off with a fun, silent team-building challenge that instantly had everyone collaborating and laughing together. The creative energy blossomed during our collaborative art activity, where participants passed their canvases around the table, contributing to each other's work to create stunning pieces that reflect trust and shared storytelling. Through music, singing, and conversation, everyone found meaningful ways to build personal resilience.

Great food, strong engagement, and positive feedback from participants made the day an overwhelming success.

Sometimes the hardest part of a tough week is just not having anyone to share it with.

On Monday 22 June, MIFANT and Just FLO are coming together at MiPlace Hub for a free two-hour workshop built around one simple idea: you do not have to do this alone.

The session runs from 10am to 12pm and is open to anyone in Darwin who wants more support, more community, or simply a gentle entry point into MIFANT's services.

Walking Strong Together concluded its second session in Tennant Creek.

In this session, women participated in a reflective arts activity, decorating calico bags with words and drawings representing their values, strengths, and what matters most to them. The work they produced was thoughtful and personal. One participant filled her bag with her children's names and wrote across the top: "I am Strong mum." Another drew her whole family and wrote "Family I Love You."

To close the session, everyone shared a meal together. Rice and beef stew with damper, made by Freda at the Women's Refuge.

Thank you to every woman who showed up, shared, and created something beautiful.

MIFANT delivered the first session of Walking Strong Together in Tennant Creek, part of the Just FLO - Figuring Life Out Holistic Wellbeing Program workshops facilitated by Breanna, held at the Women's Refugee Outreach Centre.

The session brought together a diverse group of women to yarn about their wellbeing, explore what they carry, what weighs them down, and what support looks like when it comes from people who understand. Participants engaged with the session, establishing a strong foundation of peer connection and collaborative support.

Access to culturally safe, women-centred mental health support in remote NT is not a given. Sessions like this exist because community trust is built over time, and because showing up consistently in places like Tennant Creek matters.

This is what community support looks like in Central Australia. To find out more about MIFANT's programs in Central Australia, visit www.mifant.org.au/central-australia-programs or call 1800 985 944.

We have been setting up some new games at MiPlace Hub, and the pinball machine has already become a favourite.

Recently at MiPlace Hub, participants enjoyed pool, Jenga, and the new arcade games. They also helped sort out and recycle boxes. These activities build confidence, encourage friendly conversation, and give people a reason to show up and be part of something. For our participants, that sense of routine and belonging is one of the most important parts of their wellbeing.

This is what MiPlace Program is about. A space where people connect, contribute, and feel at home. Monday to Friday, 9:30am to 1pm at 2/273 Bagot Road, Coconut Grove.

Last month, young people in Tennant Creek showed up for Do It For Dolly Day.

Under our theme "Kindness Matters," kids gathered around a shared canvas and wrote their messages for the world to see. "Stop bullying." "Be kind." "Love." Simple words, but they mean everything when a young person chooses to write them down and own them publicly.

Do It For Dolly Day started as a family's response to tragedy. Today it's a national reminder that the words we use, and the culture we create around young people, genuinely matter for their mental health and wellbeing.

MIFANT is proud to be part of that conversation in the Northern Territory. Supporting young people to speak up, connect, and feel like they belong is something we've been committed to for over 30 years.

If you're a young person, a parent, or a teacher who wants to know more about mental health support available across the NT, we're here.
