This article is a timely reminder of why our community benefits from strong, independent representation.

Territorians deserve clear plans, measurable outcomes and honest answers about how government programs are performing. When elected representatives ask detailed questions and scrutinise spending, it helps ensure decisions are made in the public interest.

Voices of the Top End are grateful for the work being done by Justine Davis MLA and the growing movement of community-backed independent representatives who are committed to transparency, accountability and putting local communities first.

OPINION: One of the most disturbing themes from Estimates hearings is what we learned about accountability, writes independent MLA Justine Davis. When we have a minister explain how laws are developed say, ‘the formal framework I adhere to is the one that Territorians elected us to do, which is to restore the Territory lifestyle’, we should all be worried.

A huge thank you to Justine Davis MLA, Independent Member for Johnston, for her incredible work during the past two weeks of Budget Estimates hearings.

From asking the tough questions and holding the Government to account, to keeping the community informed about what happens in Parliament, Justine has shown the incredible value of Independent representation.

Accessible, hardworking, and always willing to listen, Justine is a strong advocate for a democracy that works for everyone.

Your dedication to the people you represent does not go unnoticed. Thank you for everything you do for our community.

This month we celebrate the two-year anniversary of the launch of our Community Engagement Report 2024!
During months of community yarns around Darwin and beyond in early 2024, we asked locals - What makes a strong community? What makes a strong political representative? Do you feel well-represented? What issues are most important to you? What ideas do you have to address these issues?
There is a wealth of information in our community, but what we heard most loud and clear is that 80% of participants didn’t feel represented by their elected representative. In the lead up to the 2024 Territory election, many political candidates referred this report and the issues raised.
Interested to know more, you can find our report here https://www.voicesofthetopend.com/2024report
We are hosting another round of community conversations, so please get in touch if you are interested in learning more.
