NT Shelter was pleased to attend yesterday's @ National Reconciliation Week BBQ at Raintree Park, hosted by Reconciliation Northern Territory and Power and Water.

It was wonderful to see the community come together to recognise Mabo Day and National Reconciliation Week through connection, conversation and a shared meal.

A highlight was hearing about the incredible work of Larrakia Nation's HEAL Program, which supports countrymen and women sleeping rough through culture, connection and community. The dedicated volunteers who regularly provide BBQs and support to those experiencing homelessness were also behind today's event, generously cooking for everyone who attended.

Congratulations to Reconciliation Northern Territory on its recent establishment as the Territory's new peak body for reconciliation. Thank you also to the event supporters Larrakia Nation, Santos, CDC Northern Territory, Anglicare NT and CARE Flight for helping bring the community together for this important occasion.

Last night our team attended the screening of Floodland, a powerful documentary exploring the long-term impacts of natural disasters on communities, mental health and recovery.

The film highlighted the importance of trauma-informed and community-led responses, with many of the themes resonating strongly here in the Northern Territory after an horrific start to the year.

Following the screening, attendees heard from an insightful panel, Dr Rina Bruinsma CEO, TeamHEALTH, Collin Sivalingum from Australian Red Cross, Claire Boardman PSM, Northern Territory PHN and Craig Kelly CEO, Anglicare NT.

One key message from the evening was the value of investing in disaster resilience early — with estimates suggesting that for every $1 invested in disaster resilience, up to $8–$11 can be saved in post-disaster recovery costs and losses.

Thank you to TeamHEALTH for hosting such a thoughtful and important event.
