Today we recognise World Elder Abuse Awareness Day and the importance of preventing the abuse, mistreatment and neglect experienced by Older People, particularly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders and Older People.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders and Older People continue to experience disproportionately high rates of abuse. The National Elder Abuse Prevalence Study (2021) found that 23% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 65 years and over had experienced at least one form of abuse, compared with 15% of non-Indigenous Australians.

Preventing Elder Abuse requires culturally safe approaches that uphold the rights, dignity and cultural authority of Elders and Older People, ensuring their voices remain central to decisions about the care and support they receive.

From 27–29 July, the Australian Elder Abuse Conference hosted by Elder Abuse Action Australia will continue important discussions on strengthening safeguards and promoting the rights of older people.

Mabo Day is an opportunity to reflect on the enduring connection Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples have to Country and Island Home. For our Elders and Older People, these connections are more than place; they are culture, identity, belonging, family and wellbeing, and are fundamental to ageing with dignity.

NATSIAACC, the national peak body for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Ageing and Aged Care, has coordinated a joint statement supported by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations calling for urgent progression of outstanding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Aged Care reform commitments.

The statement reflects concerns raised through the Inspector-General of Aged Care and Interim First Nations Aged Care Commissioner engagement and advisory structures and represents a collective call for action from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leadership regarding unresolved Aged Care reform commitments affecting Elders and Older People.

NATSIAACC acknowledges the significant contribution of outgoing Interim First Nations Aged Care Commissioner Andrea Kelly during one of the most important periods of Aged Care reform in decades.

Through her leadership, advocacy and the release of Transforming Aged Care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People, Andrea helped elevate the voices and priorities of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders and Older People at a national level.

We sincerely thank Andrea for her commitment to advancing culturally safe, accessible and equitable Aged Care, and wish her the very best in her future.

National Reconciliation Week is a time to both reflect on the past and consider the actions needed to improve outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the future.

In line with this year’s theme, 'All In', and 59 years on from the 1967 Referendum, we are reminded that reconciliation must be reflected in action. At this pivotal point in Aged Care reform in Australia, progress means ensuring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights are embedded in how change is designed, delivered and measured.

Being 'All in' means keeping the voices of Elders and Older People at the centre of decision-making for Aged Care.

Today, and every day beyond this week, NATSIAACC will continue to honour the enduring leadership of Elders and Older People across our communities, and advocate for systems that enable them to age with dignity, cultural safety and self-determination.

NATSIAACC acknowledge National Sorry Day, which on the 26th of May marks 29 years since the tabling of the independent Bringing them Home report.

The theme for National Sorry 2026 is From Sorry to Action. With over 83 recommendations to address the harm inflicted on the Stolen Generation survivors from previous government practises and policies, only 6% have been implemented completely.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders and Older People who were part of the Stolen Generation are Ageing without culturally safe and healing informed care despite the recommendations being made nearly 30 years ago.

NATSIAACC support the Healing Foundation, who are leading the call for the Australian Government to urgently implement recommendations from the report. Action is needed in:
✔️Ensuring access to culturally safe, trauma informed aged care and health services
✔️Urgent equitable redress schemes, including extending reform intent to ensure Stolen Generation redress payments are exempt from all asset testing

A positive step toward a fairer Aged Care system.

NATSIAACC welcomes the decision to exempt Stolen Generations Redress payments from Residential Aged Care asset testing.

This long overdue reform recognises that compensation for historical trauma should not be treated as personal wealth and reflects the understanding that where inequity is identified, policy settings can and should shift.

The next step is ensuring this recognition extends across all Aged Care asset testing arrangements, including Support at Home.
