Master Builders Association ACT ACT Small Training Provider of the Year 2026. MBA Training | RTO 88163 In the ACT Master Builders was formed in 1925.

Founded in 1925, Master Builders ACT has played a key role in the local building and construction industry representing builders, suppliers, subcontractors and professionals. The Master Builders Association is Australia’s major building and construction industry association—and Australia's oldest industry association. Founded in the early 1870s in Melbourne, Sydney and Newcastle, the movement quickly grew in each state and territory before being federated nationally in 1890. Since that time, the Master Builders has grown to over 30,000 members, with offices in all major cities of Australia. It employs over 400 experienced staff with qualifications in a diverse range of disciplines including building, engineering, law, management, economics, marketing, accounting, industrial relations, safety, building surveying and training. The Master Builders Association of the ACT is part of the national Master Builders Federation. Each Master Builders operates independently to ensure that they service the needs of their local members. Master Builders ACT has members from five sectors, these are:

Residential Builders
Commercial Builders
Civil Contractors
Sub-Contractors/Trade-Contractors & Suppliers
Professional consultants
In addition to these the Master Builders has an associate membership for retirees and students that enjoy basic services provided by the association.

Does your team's paid time start the moment they clock on, or the moment they arrive on site?

A recent Federal Circuit and Family Court decision (SDA v Aldi Foods) found that pre-shift tasks, like safety checks, moving equipment, and signing in, counted as paid work, even though they happened before the rostered start time.

The Court's reasoning: if the tasks primarily benefit the employer and aren't personal in nature (unlike changing into a uniform), they're compensable.

Worth reviewing:
âś… What your contracts and industrial instruments actually say about hours of work
âś… Any pre-shift or post-shift tasks employees are expected to complete
âś… Whether that expectation is explicit or just "how things have always been done"

A reminder that isn't up for debate: if high-risk construction work is happening on your site, a Safe Work Method Statement is legally required before it starts.

High-risk activities include:
🔸 Working at heights (falls of more than 2m)
🔸 Work likely to disturb asbestos
🔸 Demolition of load-bearing structures
🔸 Work near powered mobile plant
🔸 Cutting crystalline silica material

This applies to principal contractors and every trade or subcontractor carrying out high-risk work on the project. Principals should be actively monitoring compliance, not assuming it's handled.

A generic, downloaded SWMS won't cut it. It needs to reflect the actual work and actual site conditions.

2026 Master Builders and Asset Construction Hire Excellence Awards - Commercial Construction $20million to $50million

In Canberra’s Acton precinct, Shaw Building Group has delivered a vital 24/7 facility for ACT Fire and Rescue and the ACT Ambulance Service, combining innovation, sustainability and technical excellence.

Built on undeveloped land within a BAL29 bushfire zone, the project required extensive civil works, including 30,000 cubic metres of engineered fill to stabilise the site. Its location beside Sullivans Creek and a major arterial road added further complexity, demanding careful coordination and governance throughout.

A key innovation resolves the challenge of balancing bushfire compliance with emergency response times. A first-of-its-kind self-activating external sprinkler system uses ultraviolet flame detection to trigger pumps from an integrated water supply, protecting against ember attack and radiant heat without compromising operational readiness.
