Hands Across Canberra

Hands Across Canberra A new approach to giving. Helping Canberrans engage in improving the quality of life for our most vulnerable. Together we can reach more locals in need.

Did you know...

In the ACT:

1 in 270 people are homeless
1 in 7 households struggle to survive on a minimum income
1 in 4 young people will experience a mental health problem in any 12-month period
1 in 25 people have severe or profound disabilities
1 in 6 young people have caring responsibilities

Hands Across Canberra is a new approach to philanthropy and giving in Canberra. It is being

led by the Hands Across Canberra Board comprising a group of community, business and government leaders who are committed to improving the lives of the most vulnerable people in our community. It is intended to create a framework for all Canberrans to engage in an ongoing process to improve and strengthen the quality of life for those most disadvantaged in the place we live. Canberrans are compassionate, giving people but we can do more to improve our community. Hands Across Canberra provides two main ways that you can help:

Give directly to a cause OR
Give to the Hands Across Canberra Foundation

Hand Across Canberra provides grants each year, as well as a facility for online donation, saving some charities the fees, set up and running costs of having an online payment facility themselves, ensuring more money goes back into the community. If you donate directly to a particular charity through us, 100% of your donation to them. Hands Across Canberra is here to support the community, raise awareness, funds and opportunities for both charities in Canberra and the Canberra community.

As we mark Reconciliation Day in the ACT, Hands Across Canberra is proud to stand in solidarity with First Nations people throughout the ACT and work together for a better, fairer Canberra for us all. It's a good fit for this year's Reconciliation Week theme, "All in".

At HAC, we look for projects and partners who build strength, resilience and self sufficiency, focusing on healing, reconciliation and a positive future. We recognise that Aboriginal people in Canberra often have very poor outcomes in juvenile and adult detention, child removal and other areas where they are vastly over represented by comparison with the ACT's general population.

That's not good enough for the most prosperous and best educated jurisdiction in Australia, but together with partners like , , and others we can create change. Thank you to the wise elders who guide us in Canberra - leaders like Selina Walker, Violet Sheridan, Caroline Hughes AM, Wally Bell, Richie Allan and so many more who work hard for justice and dignity. Big welcome to Netier as our newest HAC Hero.

Netier already does so much to support charities across Canberra, and we’re excited to build on that commitment together. Their ongoing support helps strengthen the community and back the incredible work happening across our region.

Excited to have you with us!

We’re proud to welcome PJs In The City as our newest HAC Champion. 💛

This week, In recognition of National Volunteer's Week, PJ’s have generously distributed 200 meal vouchers to volunteers across our charity network, recognising the people who give their time so generously to our community every day.

Volunteers from organisations including Canberra Pet Rescue, Canberra Refugee Support, Early Morning Centre, Good Omen Goodeze, Helping ACT, Radio 1RPH, Ronald McDonald House, Roundabout Canberra, St John’s Care and Tuckerbox will be able to enjoy a well-earned meal this week.

Thank you PJ’s for being true local legends, and helping us recognising so many volunteers

It's National Volunteer Week, and we're so proud to be building a better Canberra alongside so many people who truly embody what it means to . 💛

This week is a reminder that every act of service matters, whether it’s one hour, one skill, one conversation, one donation or years of commitment.

Across Canberra, volunteers are the heartbeat of local charities and community organisations, helping people feel supported, connected and cared for every day.

From all of us at Hands Across Canberra, thank you to all our charities and their volunteers for everything you do

Hands Across Canberra is delighted to receive generous support from the Commonwealth Bank's Civic and Manuka branches, as part of their CommBank Community Donation scheme.

We dropped in to meet Matt Leggett (Civic), Mary Dabinet (Manuka) and Clare (Civic).

Apparently giant cheques are no longer a thing, but good hearts and local giving never go out of style.

Nobody goes harder, tries more or generates energy like James Carter and his outstanding team at Carter + Co Agents.

Their recent bowls day at the Canberra Labor Club Group, Weston Creek, raised more than $40,000 for their named fund with Hands Across Canberra, as everyone had one hell of a good time on the greens.

Those funds form a critical part of our annual grants program, supporting thousands of Canberra locals, from those struggling with homelessness to the hungry, people hurting from violence or living with disability. They're our neighbours, our friends and they need our help.

But that’s not all, by a long shot. We call James our energiser bunny - he's in the middle of a literal marathon of marathons and 25 fitness events this year to raise funds and awareness for people who need a hand.

James, you are extraordinary - thank you to the whole Carter + Co Agents family. We couldn’t be happier to work with you on building a better and fairer Canberra for everyone.
