It is with great sadness that we share the death of Reverend Dr Simon Carey Holt, a beloved community member and husband of our Principal, Brenda Holt. Simon died on Tuesday 25 August at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, after a very brief illness.

Simon was a writer, a chef, a public theologian and a pastor, and for sixteen years the Senior Pastor at Collins Street Baptist Church in Melbourne. At Burgmann he was a familiar and much-loved presence. All our residents who met Simon or shared a community dinner with him know how caring he was, and how intently he listened to their stories and updates. He was devoted to his family, but never treated that as a closed group. There was always room at the table for one more, a room in the house to stay, dessert to be shared. Many of our staff and community had the privilege of sharing wonderful meals with Simon during his time in the Lodge here at College.

Simon will be deeply missed as a member of our community, and our residents, staff and volunteers are all immensely grateful for the time we got to spend with Simon at college. Our thoughts are with Brenda and with the whole family.

Burgmann College is working to bring a significant new painting into our community. Ingkawa (Seven Flowers) by artist Naomi Hobson, who is of Kaantju and Umpila heritage, draws on her family's connection to Country near Coen, in Cape York Peninsula. It tells the story of her grandmother and her sisters, who held a song for every season; song that connects them to yuka, the morning star, and to an increase ceremony held when the Scarlet Gum flowers and the wild honey is gathered.

Naomi's work is held by the National Gallery of Australia, the National Gallery of Victoria, the Art Gallery of South Australia, and other leading institutions, and was recently the subject of a tapestry commission for the Australian Embassy in Jakarta.

This acquisition began with a vision from Principal Dr Brenda Holt, to make Burgmann's foyer a space of welcome that reflects our respect for the enduring cultures of Australia's First Peoples. Alum and London gallerist Rebecca Hossack, recommended Naomi's work and pledged a founding gift of 25 percent of the painting's cost. We have now raised 40% of the funds needed.

Burgmann College is committed to continuing to grow our collection of works by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists; works that live throughout the College, in our dining spaces, study rooms, governance meetings and offices.

All contributions are gratefully appreciated.

Nearly 100 supporters have opened their hearts to Burgmann College this year, together giving over $200,000 across the causes closest to our community: the Burgmann College Endowment Fund, the Principal's Priorities Fund, our Scholarships & Bursaries program (including the Burgmann Price Scholarship and the Harriet Nixon Scholarship), our Resident Hardship Fund, and our Indigenous Art Fund.

We are deeply grateful for your unwavering commitment to Burgmann, and for the warmth and enthusiasm you bring to everything you give.

Because of you, residents receive support in moments of real need, scholarships open doors that might otherwise stay closed, and our community grows stronger and more connected.

Thank you for believing in Burgmann College, and for helping us provide a gold standard experience we can all be proud of.
