Sabri The IED Detector Dog
Sarbi was a female black labrador born 11-9-2002.
She was trained as an IED detector dog.
On her second tour of Afghanistan she was in a battle on 2-9=2008. During this both she and her handler were injured and her lead was severed. She went missing.
It is believed she found her way back to the base but was chased away by Afghans.
She was missing for 14 months.
She was found in a village by an American soldier who realised she understood English commands and reunited with the Australian forces. After care and quarantine she returned to Australia.
After retiring she was given to her handler and his wife.
She became a member of Clayfield-Toombul RSL Sub Branch.
Her medals awarded are,
War Dog Operational Medal with Afghanistan Clasp
Canine Service Medal for 5 Years Service
RSPCA Purple Cross Award.
On 27-3-2015 She passed away from a brain tumour.
A park in the suburb of Joyner (Brisbane) is named after her.
Her preserved remains are on display at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
