Southern Highlands Wildlife Sanctuary

Southern Highlands Wildlife Sanctuary We are creating a national centre of excellence for wildlife rescue, research, and environmental education. This is not a zoo or a visitor centre.

We are grounded in science, powered by community, and built for long-term environmental impact. We are authorized to care for wildlife through WRSC, Wildlife Rescue South Coast. The 24/7 hotline number is 0418 427 214.

The SHWS Education Centre is a vital step forward in conservation education in Australia.

We are building a place where young people can learn, question, connect with native wildlife and understand why conservation matters.

When young people understand what needs protecting, they’re more likely to protect it.

Our fundraiser is live, and every contribution brings us closer.

In the distance behind Peter is Morton National Park, 200,000 hectares of virgin national forest that forms part of a critical wildlife corridor right here in the Southern Highlands.

This corridor runs through a site called Spring Hill, and we're working to secure it.

Why? Because this land can become a protected space for animal rehabilitation, rescue and rewilding and the foundation for repopulating the Southern Highlands with koalas.

We're starting with koalas. But this is bigger than one species. It's about protecting what's left, and restoring what we've lost.

Our Pozible crowdfunding campaign is live now.

Every dollar goes directly toward securing Spring Hill and making this vision real.

Andy has joined the team of volunteers here at the Southern Highlands Wildlife Sanctuary and has kindly begun setting up cameras to monitor and record the array of wildlife that populates this land. Andy's experience in camera work, and I.T knowledge is a most welcome addition to our team.
Andy's cameras have caught some amazing photos and videos in the past, and we expect more of the same at Spring Hill.
Big Thanks Andy. We look forward to seeing what the cameras pick up.

Koalas sleep up to 20 hours a day.

Not because they’re lazy, but because eucalyptus leaves don’t give them much energy.

Koalas are perfectly designed for their environment. But the problem is their environment is changing.

Help protect koalas' habitat.

Our crowdfunding campaign is live.

Teamwork! Today, this sick wombat in was in need of attention and had two carers responding to the rescue call out. It was a good thing too, as this one was certainly a two person job. 👍 Teamwork wins!🤗 Thank you Margie for taking this video.

Conservation can’t rely on hope alone.

We are partnering with leading universities and researchers to better understand disease, habitat pressure, biodiversity loss and species movement.

Because the goal is more than survival. It’s long-term population recovery.

We’re raising $500,000 to bring this work to life.

15 new Possum boxes!
What a wonderful series of events that brought out this kindness and generous connection from the team at Bunnings Warehouse.
Tina held a possum box making workshop with local school students. They made 15 much needed new homes for the Brushtail Possums. She then spotted our post about the possum boxes and dreys that we are making with students at the sanctuary as winter's cold sets in and recognised our need for more boxes. She decided to contact us and offer us the possum boxes that her student group had made.🧡 We are of course, delighted to have them.

Today I met with lovely Tina and many the Bunnings team and we discussed many exciting possibilities for us to work together in the future for the benefit of the area wildlife that we all love. We have some great ideas already, and will be working on more. It was so motivating to meet such positive and caring folks keen to bring change.
The possum boxes will be set up soon and it will be fun to see the new residents discovering their homes. We will keep you informed as all this develops.
For now, Thank you Tina, students, men's group, and all the team at Bunnings for this very generous kindness. Your support of the wildlife is so greatly appreciated.✨️

380,000 students live within reach of the Southern Highlands.

That’s 380,000 opportunities to build understanding, connection and action for native wildlife.

Through school programs, volunteer training, citizen science and community workshops, the SHWS Education Centre will help turn awareness into protection.

Our fundraiser is live now.

By 2050, koalas in NSW could be extinct. And awareness alone isn't going to fix that.

What will fix it is understanding. Understanding how ecosystems work. How habitat loss happens. How the decisions we make every day have a direct impact on the wildlife we share this country with.

That's why the Southern Highlands Wildlife Sanctuary is building an Education Centre, a hands-on learning hub where students, families, and community members can engage with conservation in practical, meaningful ways and experience it up close.

Because the future of Australia's native species depends on people who don't just care, but know how to act on that care.

Help us build it. Our crowdfunding campaign is now live, donate via the link below and share this video to help us spread the word.

We are treating mange almost every day now. Mange is spreading in many areas and is relentless. We must match the pace to treat it. Thankfully, caring landowners are keeping and eye on the wombats and calling us in with their concerns.
Thanking you all.
