🇦🇺💔 A Long Overdue Tribute: Australia’s Newest Victoria Cross Hero — Private Richard Leslie Norden
Some acts of courage are so powerful that they take more than half a century to be fully recognised.
Today, we honour Private Richard Leslie Norden VC, a young Australian soldier from Gundagai, New South Wales, who was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for Australia in late 2024 — making him one of the most recent recipients of our highest award for gallantry.
On 14 May 1968, during the fierce Battle of Fire Support Base Coral in Vietnam, 19-year-old Richard Norden’s platoon was suddenly ambushed by North Vietnamese Army soldiers. Under intense enemy fire, Richard did something extraordinary.
He ran forward — not once, but multiple times — straight into the killing zone. First, he dragged his badly wounded Section Commander and forward scout back to safety. Then, with his own ammunition gone and already wounded, he picked up an enemy weapon and continued fighting. He even helped recover the body of another fallen mate, all while under direct fire.
His courage helped secure the position and likely saved the lives of many of his comrades.
Richard survived the immediate battle but was severely wounded that day. He continued serving until the end of his deployment, but the war left deep scars. He passed away far too young on 30 October 1972 at just 24 years of age.
For 56 years, his extraordinary bravery went officially under-recognised. Thanks to the tireless efforts of his family, veterans, and supporters, Richard finally received the Victoria Cross he so richly deserved.
He was a son, a husband to Robyn, and a father. A young country boy who, when his mates needed him most, ran toward danger without hesitation.
This award is not just about one soldier — it’s about never forgetting the quiet courage shown by so many who served in Vietnam, a war that many Australians still find difficult to talk about.
Private Richard Norden VC — your name now stands proudly alongside the greatest heroes in our military history.
Your sacrifice was never forgotten by those who loved you… And now Australia will remember you, too.
Lest We Forget. ❤️🇦🇺
