On the anniversary of the Battle of Beersheba, we remember the courage and determination of the Australian Light Horsemen who, as dusk fell on 31 October 1917, launched one of history’s most daring mounted charges.

The successful charge by the 4th Light Horse Brigade helped secure the town of Beersheba and marked the beginning of the end of Ottoman control in Palestine. More than a century later, their legacy of service and courage endures.

How did a wildflower become the symbol of Remembrance Day? 🌺

During the First World War, red poppies were among the first plants to return to the shattered battlefields of northern France and Belgium. Soldiers said their colour came from the blood of their mates.

At Ypres in 1915, the poppies moved Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae to write a poem that begins:

"In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row"

Moina Michael, who worked for the American YMCA, read the poem just before the Armistice and resolved to wear a red poppy always.

Anna Guérin, the French YMCA secretary, took the idea further, selling poppies to support widows, orphans and veterans in need. The poppy was soon worn across the allied nations.

In 1921, the forerunner of the RSL imported a million silk poppies made in French orphanages and sold them for a shilling each, splitting the money between a charity for French children and its own welfare work.

The RSL still sells poppies for Remembrance Day today.

82 years ago, Ian Hart enlisted to serve his country. This week, at 100 years old, he finally received the medals recognising his full wartime service.

Ian enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force at just 18 years old and trained with the Water Transport Company. During the Second World War, he served in New Guinea, Manus Island, Bougainville and Borneo, completing 245 days of active service overseas and another 622 days in Australia.

His service was not without danger. During the final stages of the Pacific campaign, Ian survived the sinking of a 300-ton Army vessel near Milne Bay.

For decades, Ian wore miniature medals that represented only part of his service. This week, more than 80 years after leaving the Army, he was presented with his full WWII service medals at Queensland Parliament House, with the presentation made by Premier David Crisafulli.

More than 80 years overdue, but recognition well deserved 🇦🇺
