PRONIA

PRONIA Community Services, Melbourne, Australia
PRONIA - for a stronger community PRONIA [Pron’-ya] empowers, advocates and cares for the Australian Greek community.

From its origins as a vital support system for the first wave of vulnerable Greek migrants, to building a strong community over 50 years in the making. And now paving the way for whole new generation to realise their potential. Our comprehensive support services, in-depth cultural knowledge, educational expertise and advocacy is undertaken with the aim of creating a stronger community that enables

each and every person to overcome disadvantage and reach their potential. PRONIA means ‘to provide’ or ‘make provision for’ in Greek, but of course it also means more than that. Its deeper connotations of ‘care’ and ‘forethought’ lie at the heart of our mission.

Homelessness Week is a vital reminder that most of this crisis remains hidden behind closed doors—manifesting as severe overcrowding, couch surfing, and transient emergency accommodation rather than just rough sleeping. Acknowledging these realities allows us as an organisation to better understand the systemic pressures affecting our community and look at how we can contribute to meaningful change.

𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘀 & 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁: If you or someone you know requires immediate housing assistance, look up 𝗔𝘀𝗸 𝗜𝘇𝘇𝘆 or call the 𝗩𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘄𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 (𝟭𝟴𝟬𝟬 𝟴𝟮𝟱 𝟵𝟱𝟱) for free, 24/7 localised support.

Join us 𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝘁 𝟯𝗽𝗺, for a moving conversation about Cyprus, the memories passed from one generation to the next, and the stories that must never be forgotten.

𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗻 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀 will discuss 𝗔𝘀 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝗹𝘆, written by acclaimed Cypriot author 𝗘𝘃𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗸𝗶 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗼𝘂𝘀-𝗣𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗱𝗼𝗽𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗼𝘂 and translated into English by John. Launched by the Hon Bill Shorten last Sunday, the novel follows three sisters forced to flee Kyrenia during the Turkish invasion of 1974. It is a deeply moving story about war, loss, shared grief and survival.

𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗮 𝗞𝗶𝗱𝗱 will speak about discovering her mother Maria’s secret diary and her decision to share Maria’s experiences through writing. Their first book, 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗻𝘀, was shortlisted for the Victorian Community History Awards. Helena’s contribution to literature as a Cypriot of the diaspora was also recognised in Cyprus, where she received the CYDIA Award in 2024.
