Northern Community Legal Centre ("NCLC") is a generalist community legal service. NCLC is committed to providing access to justice through free legal advice and casework to the disadvantaged in Melbourne's North West.

Northern CLC is excited to announce that we have been awarded funding through two Victorian Legal Services Board & Commissioner grant rounds, Justice Anew and Building Justice. This funding will strengthen and expand our efforts to improve access to justice for victim-survivors of family violence across Melbourne's north.

Through our Safe Steps to Legal Rights program, delivered in partnership with Safe Steps and the Salvation Army Family Violence Crisis and Support Services, we will expand our successful pilot model of integrated legal assistance across four crisis and refuge accommodation sites, including the Good Samaritan Inn. This expansion will help ensure victim-survivors can access the support they need when they need it the most.

Our Portable Justice Project, delivered in partnership with South-East Monash Legal Service, Westjustice and Peninsula Community Legal Centre, will explore innovative technological solutions to support continuity of legal care for victim-survivors as they move through different stages of recovery. The project aims to generate sector-wide learning about how technology can help deliver consistent, place-based legal support, regardless of a person's location or circumstances.

We are also advocating for the wage theft recovery process to be more effective. As part of the WWC Vic, we helped author a submission to the Parliamentary Inquiry into the wage theft framework. The current framework places a lot of burden on the individual experiencing wage theft and is overly complex to navigate. The Albanese Government has also recently proposed the establishment of a Fair Work Court, which would provide a specialist forum for resolving workplace relations disputes, working alongside the Fair Work Commission. We look forward to contributing to the consultation period to ensure that workplace justice is faster, simpler, and more accessible for workers.

If implemented effectively, the Albanese Government's proposal to establish a Fair Work Court could be a step towards making workplace justice faster, simpler, and more accessible for workers. A specialist Fair Work Court has the potential to significantly improve outcomes for workers if it is designed with accessibility, trauma-informed practice, and the realities faced by vulnerable workers at its centre, and includes practical mechanisms for calculating underpayments.

At the Working Women's Centre Victoria (WWC Vic), we see firsthand how women and non-binary workers in insecure and low-paid work are unable to pursue workplace claims because existing processes are too complex, costly and time-consuming. Too often, workers are forced to choose between enforcing their rights and protecting their financial security and wellbeing. In our recent Wage Theft Inquiry submission, we called for more efficient, accessible and low-cost pathways for workers to recover unpaid wages and enforce their workplace rights.

Gender stereotypes and harmful attitudes about relationships continue to influence how young people see themselves, others and what healthy relationships look like.

Through our Take the Lead project, we worked with young women from high schools across Melbourne's Northwest to explore these stereotypes and promote respectful relationships.

In one workshop, participants shared their experiences of harmful stereotypes and how they would respond to them. Their responses helped shape this final part of the campaign which challenges outdated and misogynistic stereotypes through the voices of young women. While these harmful stereotypes are unfortunately still prevalent, young women are rejecting them in force.

As part of our Take the Lead project we asked young women in high schools around Melbourne’s Northwest what they would say to a friend experiencing self-doubt.

These women had to come up with different scenarios they’ve faced, such as trying something new, stepping onto the sporting field or feeling overwhelmed at school. They then had to write how they would respond to a friend experiencing uncertainty in these moments. Their responses remind us that while misogynistic messages online are growing louder, young women are challenging these narratives with solidarity.

Their words formed the foundation of our campaign which celebrates the strength and diversity of women through the voices of young people.

With the rise of the manosphere and misogynistic stereotypes online, it has never been more important to amplify young women’s voices.

As part of our Take the Lead project, we asked young women from high schools across Melbourne’s Northwest on what comes to mind when they hear the words “women are...”. They then turned their responses into an empowering poster. These posters will be collated into one and displayed at one of the participating schools.

These posters are one part of our campaign, which aims to challenge harmful stereotypes and celebrate the strength of women, through the voices of young women.

AusAlert is a new national warning system that uses the latest technology to send emergency messages to compatible mobile devices such as mobile phones, tablets and smart watches. It will be ready to use in October 2026, but before it launches, the Australian Government needs to test the system across Australia to ensure it works accordingly.

On Monday 27 July 2026 compatible mobile devices may receive a test alert which will make your device vibrate and play a siren sound for at least 10 seconds. This may increase risk for people experiencing family violence as the alerts might expose safety devices. These devices may still receive the alert even if they are in ‘silent’ or ‘do not disturb’ mode.

If you are concerned about your device sounding an alarm, it is recommended that it be switched to aeroplane mode or turned off an hour before the test, during the test and then for another 24 hours after the test.

This NAIDOC week we are celebrating Australia’s first signed treaty with Aboriginal people, between the Victorian government and First People’s Assembly of Victoria.

Treaty recognises the violent dispossession of Aboriginal communities within what is now the state of Vitoria at the time of colonisation and the lasting intergenerational inequalities that this has caused, including systemic gaps and barriers within the justice system.

Treaty aims to give Aboriginal people more control over the policies, funding and decisions that impact their communities and is an important step towards self-determination and truth-telling.
