It was great for the Executive Teams from Annie North Inc and Bendigo Community Health Services to meet last week to discuss client needs and explore opportunities to partner together.

So important to share these insights and to meet in person.

In recognition of Sorry Day, today the team at Annie North paused for a minute's silence, remembering the Stolen Generations.

Through our work, we bear witness to the pain, suffering, hurt and intergenerational trauma that the descendents of the Stolen Generations face.

We commit to always remembering the grief, suffering and loss of the children taken, and their families, who never stopped looking.

Collectively, we know that Sorry is not just a word, it's action, and we will ensure that we play our part to ensure that future generations grow up safe, and connected to family, culture and country.

A huge thank you to our wonderful volunteers from Rotary (Bendigo South) for helping at our garden working bee on Saturday.

Together we moved an incredible 15m³ of mulch, removed tired old plants and gave the gardens a fresh new look. It was fantastic to also have residents and children join in and lend a hand throughout the day. After all the hard work, everyone enjoyed a well-earned BBQ lunch together.

A special thank you as well to Bunnings Kangaroo Flat for generously donating a fantastic selection of native plants to help bring new life to the gardens.

We truly appreciate the community spirit and support from everyone who came along and helped make the day such a success!

This is what meaningful collaboration looks like. When government, community housing, and the family violence sector work together in a meaningful way, women, children and young people have a stronger foundation for healing and recovery.

Today I was honoured to officially open the new Safe Places Housing in Bendigo with Haven Home Safe, Annie North Inc and Centre for Non Violence.

The Federal Labor Government has delivered $2.5m through the Safe Places Program to provide much-needed housing for women and children who have experienced family violence.

This is truly a local partnership and collaboration of three amazing organisations.

It’s hard to believe 10 years have passed since the landmark Royal Commission into Family Violence in Victoria handed down its findings along with 227 recommendations in 2016.

It's worth 10 minutes of your time to read our latest paper by our esteemed Dr. Kylie Cocking, Quality and Compliance Lead at Annie North Inc.

Last week we were fortunate to host Pauline Fakaia, Project Coordinator at Seif Ples in the Solomon Islands on a quick visit to Annie North while she was in Melbourne for the Women Deliver conference.

Seif Ples is a 24/7 crisis centre in the Solomon Islands that provides immediate, comprehensive support to survivors of sexual and family violence with a focus on delivering urgent medical care, psychological first aid, and a safe environment where clients are treated with respect, confidentiality, and non‑discrimination.

Trained nurses offer specialised care such as treatment for injuries, emergency contraception, testing and prevention of sexually transmitted infections, and vaccinations, while also facilitating referrals to longer‑term services including counselling, legal aid, and accommodation.

Seif Ples aims to provide a compassionate first response that restores dignity, supports recovery, and empowers individuals to make informed decisions about their safety and next steps.

May is Family Violence Prevention Month and today, on the 6th May, we pause to honour the lives lost because of family violence.

Annie North's vision is that all women and children live free from domestic and family violence. We honour and pay tribute to the courage of all victim survivors.

Tonight, as part of National Family Violence Remembrance Day, Annie North will join in the Community Candlelight Vigil in Bendigo, pausing to remember those we have lost to family violence, and their loved ones.

The community vigil will give us all a moment to reflect and to offer solidarity and hope to families who have or are experiencing family violence in our community.

Ribbons will be available for community members to write their own messages of remembrance, solidarity and hope - and will be displayed along the gates of the Conservatory Gardens as part of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

The vigil is organised by The Loddon Consortium for Gender Equality & Violence Prevention, a partnership that we play an active role in, made up of five specialist gender-based violence organisations across the Loddon area:
- Annie North Inc Women’s Refuge
- Centre Against Sexual Assault Central Victoria (CASACV)
- Centre for Non Violence (CNV)
- Omnia Community Health
- Women's Health Loddon Mallee

If you, or someone you know is experiencing family violence, please reach out for support.

Today is International Day of Women and Girls in Science, and we're celebrating the women who've been shaping Australian botany for over 200 years.

Take, for example, the Scott sisters, who documented native flora with scientific precision in the 1800s; or Barbara Briggs, who used "detective botany" to help solve a criminal case; or D'harawal woman Fran Bodkin, who connected Western science with Indigenous knowledge. And there are so many more. Their stories are wild, wonderful and well overdue for your attention!
