MYSA provides services and programs to support multicultural young people and young families living in South Australia. Covering challenging key areas such as settlement: health, homelessness, drug and alcohol, crisis intervention, domestic violence and mentoring.

This week’s myth is based on the idea that there’s a simple process for anyone who wants to move to Australia.

In reality, Australia’s migration system has a number of different pathways, each with its own rules, eligibility requirements and limitations. Some visas have capped places, some are highly competitive, and applicants may need to provide extensive evidence that they meet the requirements.

For many people, the journey to Australia involves months, or even years of applications, paperwork, waiting and uncertainty.

So while Australia has many different visa pathways, getting a visa is far from easy.

Areas for development: Easily distracted. Regularly falls asleep on the job. Still working on the concept of personal space. Often rummages through colleagues' bins.

Employee’s comments: “Woof.”

Manager’s comments: Captain continues to exceed expectations. His interpawsonal skills are exceptional and he consistently contributes to a pawsitive woofplace culture. His productivity remains rebarkably high, particularly when his responsibilities include cuddles, pats and office inspections.

He is a genuine tail-blazer in employee wellbeing.

This week’s myth is one that can be pretty easy to believe: that there are only so many jobs to go around, and migrants are taking them from Australians.

The reality is that Australia’s workforce relies on people from all kinds of backgrounds, including migrants who bring skills and experience that are needed across healthcare, construction, technology and many other industries.

And for young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds, finding work is about more than having a job. It’s about building independence, gaining experience, developing skills and creating opportunities for their future.

Migration doesn’t have to be a choice between them and us - a strong workforce creates opportunities for everyone 💜

There’s something so special about seeing your little one reach a milestone 💜

For Spring, that moment came at our Mums and Bubs Playgroup, when her 14-month-old son Ethan put fruit in his mouth for the first time.

After being born prematurely and eating through a feeding tube for most of his life, Ethan was having trouble learning how to eat. That all changed during snack time at playgroup, when he sat at the table with other kids and learned by watching them.

“Because of the playgroup, and spending time at the table with other children eating, he started trying to put fruits in his mouth,” Spring says.

“That’s why we come to every session, even though I don’t live near here.”

Who thinks job interviews should be more fun? 🙋

This week’s Chin Waggers put their listening and communication skills to the test with Job Interview Twister! They spun the colour wheel, jumped to the right spot and answered questions they might come across in a real job interview.

It was a fun way to practice thinking on the spot, understanding questions and communicating clearly, and once they made it to the end of the board… they were hired! 🎉

The tricky part? Sometimes the first meaning we take from a question isn’t quite what was being asked... Especially when you’re learning English!

A lot of people in Australia are struggling in the housing crisis right now. It's a complex issue, and when issues are this complex it can be tempting to look for a simple explanation - or one group to blame.

The reality is much bigger than that.

Australia is facing a housing shortage, with the Productivity Commission identifying issues including housing supply, planning, infrastructure and construction as important parts of the challenge.

Meanwhile, refugees and asylum seekers make up around 0.5% of Australia's population, according to UNHCR figures.

Housing is a serious issue that deserves serious solutions. Blaming people who have come to Australia seeking safety doesn't get us any closer to them 💜

A little throwback to our school holiday program! 💜

During the holidays, young people had the chance to try new things, get out of their comfort zones and build skills they can take with them into everyday life.

From Indigenous basket weaving and cooking with MYSA, to taking on the challenges at Hijinx Hotel and learning how to tackle a tax return, each activity offered something different, allowing them to flex their creativity, problem-solving, teamwork, communication and practical life skills ❤️

We can't wait to see what our next school holiday program has in store!

Today is International Youth Day 💜

This year’s theme, Different Contexts, Common Aspirations, recognises that young people may come from very different backgrounds and experiences, but share many of the same hopes for the future: to learn, work, have a voice and build a life they’re proud of.

For young people from migrant and refugee backgrounds, those aspirations can be shaped by experiences across cultures, countries and communities. Their perspectives bring something important to the communities they’re part of.

International Youth Day is a chance to celebrate those perspectives, recognise the resilience of young people and make sure they have opportunities to be heard, participate and shape the future.

Here’s to the young people bringing new ideas, new perspectives and new energy to our communities, today and every day 💜

Sometimes, finding the right support can be the first step towards a new beginning.

For Maria*, that support helped her navigate a challenging time, rebuild her confidence and strengthen her connection with her daughter.

After settling in Australia from Venezuela, Maria was adjusting to a new environment while facing challenges including language barriers, social isolation and the complexities of parenting away from familiar supports.

By taking the time to understand Maria’s experiences and provide support that was culturally responsive and tailored to her needs, the MYSA team worked alongside her to build confidence, develop new strategies and create positive change for her family.
