Yesterday was IDAHOBIT, the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersex Discrimination and Transphobia.

Held annually on 17 May, IDAHOBIT marks the date the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from the International Classification of Diseases in 1990, an important moment in the fight for equality and inclusion. Prior to this, homosexuality was classified globally as a mental illness.

At SYC, we believe everyone deserves to feel safe, respected and able to be themselves.

Last week, our team came together to recognise the day through conversations centred around inclusion, belonging and allyship.

0. That’s how many rental properties in South Australia are affordable for a young person on Youth Allowance, as reported by Believe Housing Australia's latest Rental Affordability Snapshot.

At The Foundry, we see what this means in real life. Young people who are studying, working, or actively trying to get on their feet, but simply can’t access the private rental market. Without options, many are facing housing stress or are at risk of experiencing homelessness.

As the state’s only youth-specific drop-in hub, we support young people to navigate these challenges every day, connecting them with advice, support and pathways forward.

But the reality is, support alone isn’t enough when there are no affordable homes to access.
Young people need to be part of the solution. That means targeted housing strategies, investment, and a system that recognises their needs.

Because everyone deserves a safe place to land and a fair chance to move forward.

This Wednesday is Youth Homelessness Matters Day, a national day to raise awareness about child and youth homelessness.

At The Foundry, we are a drop-in hub that provides an individualised response to every young person. Our face-to-face services provide a range of material supports, including essential amenities such as laundry and shower facilities, access to fresh food and pantry items, and quiet spaces to access computers and phones. We additionally provide in-house and external referrals to services, employment support and wellbeing activities.

In 2024–25, 42,763 children and young people aged under 25 years presented alone to homelessness services across Australia. Half were turned away because there simply wasn’t enough support available.

We want a safe place for every young Australian. To learn more or share your support, visit https://www.yfoundations.org.au/yhmd/

"I love that I get to spend every day connecting, creating and innovating with all the young people that walk through our doors."

Lucy is the Team Leader of The Foundry by SYC, our youth skills hub in the Adelaide CBD. Since opening in 2021, The Foundry has been a place where young people can access support, build skills and take steps toward independence. From essential services to wellbeing and employment programs, the hub meets young people where they’re at and helps them navigate life’s challenges.

For Lucy, it’s the relationships that make the work so meaningful. Over nearly eight years at SYC, she has helped create opportunities for people to grow, showcase their skills and build confidence.
