Today marks the beginning of Refugee Week, a time to recognise and celebrate the refugees who call Australia home and the valuable contributions they make to our communities.

Refugee children and young people have the same rights as all children. This Refugee Week, we are highlighting some of the key rights set out in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and reaffirming our commitment to ensuring every child feels safe, valued and supported to thrive.

On Friday we welcomed the National Children's Commissioner Deb Tsorbaris to Kaurna Country.

It was an opportunity for the National Commissioner to reconnect and meet with a group of exceptional SA leaders with expertise in research, systems reform, service design and practice supporting families, children and communities.

A shared commitment to children and young people connects us all and drives our passion to do better across systems, in the support we provide to families, and in how we value and centre children and young people in decisions that impact their immediate lives and future.

Children are not only future citizens but they are citizens now.

My thanks to the incredible team at Relationships Australia SA led by Claire Ralfs and to Sarah Decrea and your crew of exceptional practitioners - for so generously sharing your practice wisdom, cultural knowledge and passion with us today. A child's experience and perspective, when given due weight and heard by those who care for them, can be the catalyst for transformative change within families.

An inspiring day and grateful to be able to learn from and collaborate with each of you.

Last week the Commissioner was part of a panel with Tim Aguis, Chair of Kaurna Yerta Aboriginal Corporation and Moira Were AM, Mayor of the City of Onkaparinga at the 2026 LGA Conference and OGM.

They discussed civic engagement and leadership, with a focus on how to expand who we engage with and how we define good leadership.

The Commissioner's call to action for local government and others seeking to genuinely involve young people in democratic processes is to:

✳️Think beyond adult advisory structures as the primary way to engage
✳️Go to where young people are, seeking partnerships with schools, sporting groups and services
✳️Connect listening with action by providing opportunities to make decisions, inform process, and build capability
✳️Bring them in and share power - being transparent about constraints and what's possible in institutions helps to build the skills needed to navigate and create change

Children and young people are not just future citizens, they are citizens now.

This morning, The Commissioner and some of our team were honoured to attend the Reconciliation Breakfast hosted by Reconciliation South Australia. We were privileged to hear from speakers and performers whose voices reminded us of the importance of listening, learning, and walking together in the spirit of reconciliation.

Thank you to everyone who shared their wisdom and performances, creating a powerful space for reflection, truth-telling, and connection, and a sincere thank you to We Create Print Deliver for the invitation and for bringing people together in such a meaningful way.

Reconciliation is strengthened through understanding and action and we are grateful to have shared in this morning’s event.

Today is National Sorry Day, a time to acknowledge the strength and resilience of Stolen Generations survivors, and to reflect on the ongoing impacts of government policies on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, families and communities.

As we begin National Reconciliation Week 2026, we’re reminded that reconciliation is not a one-off event. It is an ongoing commitment that requires all of us to listen, learn, reflect and act.

This year’s theme, All In for Reconciliation, calls on every Australian to consider the role we can play in building stronger relationships, shifting power, and creating a more just and inclusive future for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Talking with children and young people about reconciliation helps build understanding, empathy and respect from an early age. Creative activities can help start important conversations at home, in classrooms, workplaces and community spaces across South Australia.

🎨 We’re encouraging all South Australians to get involved by downloading the colouring sheets, community installation activity, stickers and T-shirt designs to print, wear, share and display in your school, workplace, service or community.

There’s space to draw or write the actions you’ll take to be All In for Reconciliation because meaningful change happens when we all contribute, together. Put your completed designs on display to create a visible commitment to reconciliation in your community.

📍 Download the resources and start the conversation today at https://www.reconciliation.org.au/our-work/national-reconciliation-week/posters-resources/
