At YMCA SA, we take a moment today, to pause, to reflect, and to honour those who served. We're proud to be part of communities across the state, and today we stand with them in remembrance; lest we forget. 🌿

This International Women's Day, we're celebrating the women who power the Y 💜

At YMCA South Australia, women aren't just participants. They're leaders, mentors, lifeguards, coaches, managers and trailblazers.

With women making up 76% of our workforce and 70% of our leadership team, their impact shapes every program, every space and every community we serve.

Last month, YMCA South Australia was named Outstanding Organisation at the 2026 Power of Her Awards, recognising the strength and leadership of the women across our organisation.

Here’s to strong women building stronger communities.

YMCA SA has delivered swimming teacher qualification courses in Port Lincoln and at Fleurieu Aquatic Centre, led by Swimming Lessons Specialist Sam Wise. Sam recently gained her qualification in Training and Assessment and is a qualified AUSTSWIM Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety.

Building this capability internally means YMCA SA can now host courses in regional areas without relying on minimum participant numbers. This supports local workforce development and helps strengthen skills in communities where they are needed most.

3 year-old pre-school started today at YMCA Aldinga ELC with the launch of the Flying Start program. We’re so excited to bring this program to our service, providing children with structured play-based learning to help build their confidence and curiosity.

The Flying Start program provides investment into staffing and resources to provide extra support for educators and children, such as PlayActive, emotional regulation resources, The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program and more. We can’t wait to see how this program evolves!

YMCA South Australia has been recognised as one of the winners in SafeWork SA’s Organise Your Own Workplace Activity, following two staff-led initiatives designed to strengthen work health and safety across our services.

The Hazard Hunter competition encouraged teams to actively identify hazards in their workplaces, while The Great Safety Quiz Off saw sites go head to head on key WHS topics including the WHS Act, chemical safety, slip hazards, manual tasks, and reporting.

Congratulations to our winning sites:
🏅 The Parks Recreation Sports Centre with an outstanding average score of 19/20
🏅 St Dominics OSHC and Scotch OSHC, both achieving 18/20 and sharing the Children’s Services prize

This recognition reinforces the value of safety leadership, supported by staff who understand the systems and apply them in practice. A big shout our to our safety team for organising and running these initiatives and to all of our staff who participated in the activities.
