To simply say last night’s presentation of Sir John Rutter’s “Magnificat” was wonderful doesn’t do justice to the many glorious facets brought to the fore. A powerful “Magnificat anima mea” opening, the gentle warmth of “Of a Rose, a lovely Rose”, the marching-like majesty of “Fecit potentiam” and the flowing peacefulness of “Et Misericordia” still echo.
Yet, almost overshadowing all of that, we were all entranced and lifted by the magnificent voice of our Soprano Soloist, Gianna Guttilla. Gloriously floating in an out throughout the performance. Worth being there for that alone.
Credit needs to be given to our organist for the evening, Josh van Komkelenberg. At a critical moment, the organ decided not to do what it was told. Undeterred, Josh and our wonderful Piano Accompanist, Sachiko Hidaka, speedily swung into action to set up the grand piano. Not a beat was missed. Well done, Josh! And our thanks to Sachiko for her always professional piano support for the selection of carols enjoyed in the second half of the evening.
Last, but not least, a special note of thanks to our Director Andew Chatterton. For two reasons. One, his natural drive and passion to bring the best out of us – at the concert and in the weeks leading up to it. We reckon he was happy with the outcome last night. Second, a public recognition at the conclusion of the evening, that Andrew is taking the first half of next year off from working with the choir (and his daytime job) for a well-earned R and R. President David Smith presented Andrew with a small gift as a token of our thanks, to wish him well and looking forward to his return later next year.
