The State Government has announced the FY26/27 projects awarded grant support from the State Bicycle Fund.

The Fund is supporting 16 new projects across metropolitan and regional councils, to design or build new crossings, bike paths and facilities.

The program will deliver more than $5m worth of projects, but we know that councils across SA have so much more they want to build and need much more support than just the $2m available.

These incremental improvements are good for ticking things along, and the program works, so we need to see State Governments invest in the State Bike Fund to unlock it's full potential!

We could say something about the lack of regard for human life, the leniency of this dangerous act, the deep anger we feel on behalf of those hurt. But we would be preaching to those who feel the same. How do we get the safety of cyclists to be treated seriously? How do we humanize cyclists in the eyes of society at large? These are questions we're grappling with, through our Bike Art Zine, Biketober activities and support for the Australian Walking and Cycling Conference being held mid October.

🚨 A man who strung fence wire across a bike path in Australia and injured cyclists has avoided jail. Police found a video of the wire on his phone, captioned with a devil emoji and the words "I'm so evil."

Levi Young-Henderson, 20, received a suspended sentence in a South Australian court on Thursday. He had pleaded guilty to acting likely to cause harm and damaging property, down from the original charge of acting likely to cause serious harm.

The wire went up on two mornings in January 2025 on a busy bike path outside Adelaide. Three male riders doing about 22mph (35km/h) were knocked off their bikes. Police said the wire had been taken from a fence, tied to a tree and strung "at the most dangerous height you can possibly get."

One of the three, Morgan Billings, said his $15,000 (A$21,500) bike was written off. Three days later, a woman hit a second wire. She was not hurt, but her handlebars were damaged.

A prosecutor told the court the bikes were worth more than $35,000 (A$50,000) when bought.

His sentence of 11 months and five days was suspended on a two-year good behavior bond.

This Biketober, City of Adelaide has a series of guided bike rides into the city in partnership with Bike SA.

The activities can support you to ride your bike or trike more. These FREE guided rides from the north, east and west will help build your confidence with a practice cycle to and from city. There will be a stop at a cafe in the city, with a free coffee too! 🚴‍♂️☕

The ride will be at a friendly pace and you can wear what you feel comfortable riding in. The routes are on quieter streets and cycleways.

There are also sessions for women wanting to get back on the bike, with friendly experienced instructors. And a session for learning to ride safely with kids.

There's no better time to start, or re-start, using your bike to get around town than Spring!

Wednesday 14 October is National Ride to Work Day, so whether you ride everyday or haven't ridden for a while, now is the time to check out Adelaide's bikeways and enjoy the benefits of healthy, fun, sustainable, no-cost commuting!

Even substituting one day's car-travel a week with cycling will add up to some serious fuel and parking cost savings for you and your household.

So dust off your bike, check the tyres are pumped, your brakes work, the chain is oiled and your front, rear and side reflectors are in good condition.

Get a rack and panniers fitted to your bike, let it do the hard work of carrying your gear (a backpack is fine too!).

And check what paths are near you using maps.sa.gov.au/cycleinstead/ journey planner.

Do a test ride on a weekend to learn the way and make sure you feel comfortable getting where you need to go.

With major corridors like the Mike Turtur Bikeway and Westside Bikeway now re-opened, more safe options are available to make your trip possible.
