🌱Rome is the Italian municipality with the largest area of green space and agricultural land. Its green parks and forests are the lungs of the eternal city and provide both a shelter during heatwaves and vibrant wide, free community spaces for citizens to meet.
🚎Unfortunately, there are not enough investments in fossil-free public transport services, as most public buses still run on diesel fuel, and it takes a very long time to create new metro railways. Moreover, the 2026 summer heatwave has exposed a profound socio-economic vulnerability of the suburbs to the effects of the climate crisis, creating phenomenon known as the „cooling poverty“ and heating urban islands, where poorer households have fewer green spaces and can’t afford adequate infrastructure to cool down households.
🎯While the Municipality of Rome and its Mayor are investing in greening spaces mostly in the city center, climate justice would be best achieved if real infrastructural investments were made for sustainable urban planning in poorer/most vulnerable neighborhoods and if the PNRR (National Recovery and Resilience Plan) funds were invested in renewable energy fueled public transportation.

Think climate progress only happens at the national level? Think again. It can be driven from the community level too! Join Zero Emissions Day of Action on September 21 to push our local leaders to take action to reduce emissions and protect our planet for future generations.

Across the world, our Climate Hubs are marking the day with local action bringing people together to talk about clean energy and engage with local decision-makers.

There are several things you can do right now, if you can't make it to events in specific locations - you can contact your mayor/municipality to bring cheap, clean energy to your community:

📬 Deliver or mail the petition - it’s not too late to get the message to your local government.
📲 Spread the word - share the campaign and invite others to take action too. Share the campaign

We hear about climate action (or the lack of it) happening around the world every day. But what’s happening where you live?

Cities have a huge role to play in building a cleaner, climate-neutral future. And as residents, we can take a closer look at what our cities are doing, ask questions and find opportunities to make a difference.

Join our Cities in Transition: Getting Started workshop to explore the climate action of the city where you live or work.

We’ll use questions based on our City Climate Action Assessment Checklist to look at what your city commits to do, how does it want to decrease emissions and increase its resilience in light of climate change impacts, and where there might be room for action.

You don’t need to be a climate expert or have used our Checklist before. Bring your city, your curiosity and your questions.

Spanish government is calling on the European Commission and EU member states to strengthen the EU's climate resilience framework. The Spanish government wants clearer, binding requirements for how countries prepare for heatwaves, droughts and floods, along with a dedicated EU‑level budget to support adaptation. After another summer of fires, water shortages and record temperatures, Spain argues that Europe needs a more coordinated approach so regions aren’t left to face escalating climate impacts alone.

This push comes just as United Nations Environmental Program warns that the world is likely to overshoot the 1.5°C warming limit - a threshold that will intensify extreme weather across the world. Strengthening resilience is not next generation's concern - it’s becoming essential for protecting communities, economies and infrastructure right now.

💚 Sinkkonen - psychologist and eco-emotion expert, who will lead us in exploring care, emotions and regenerative activism - and how we can turn despair into hope
⚡ Asuncion - climate justice and human rights activist working on transition minerals and just energy transitions, who will help us ask what it really means to make the energy transition fair and people-centered

Do you know what your city is actually doing about climate change?

Cities have climate plans, targets and commitments - but what do they mean in practice? What actions are being taken, who is affected, and how can we hold local leaders accountable?

Join our Cities in Transition: Getting Started workshop on 16th of September to explore the climate plan of your city and learn how to ask the right questions.

You don't need to be a climate expert or arrive with all the answers. The workshop will give you the tools to start investigating what your city has committed to and what it is doing in practice.

Why now? Last June, Climate Reality Leaders organised almost 80 events around the world, engaging city officials and communities in local climate action. Dear Mayors: our cities are ready for clean, affordable energy⌚

Energy bills are rising. Climate impacts are intensifying. But our neighbourhoods, districts, and whole cities have another choice: a future powered by clean, affordable energy.

That's why we're asking mayors and city leaders to make the clean energy transition a priority in our towns and cities.

Now, we need your voice.

Across the Climate Reality network and beyond, we're collecting signatures and mobilizing people to bring this message to their own cities. On September 21, Zero Emissions Day, Climate Reality Leaders and members of our network will take the petition to local decision-makers and ask them to act.
