The Constitutional Amendment No.3 Bill provides a soft landing spot for Zimbabwe. Otherwise, the real call should have been a total abolishment of elections for not less than 25 years in response to the equal number of years that Zimbabwe has been deliberately subjected to by ruinous and punitive illegal unilateral sanctions.
Among other vital changes, the bill seeks to extend the election cycle from 5 years to 7 years, a move that is more accommodative to a nation living under brutal unilateral Western sanctions, which have always presented an uneven electoral ground in an effort to ensure a quick regime change.
Politics is a game of rules that must be defined and implemented. The fight against illegal unilateral sanctions must be consolidated through amending and redefining our constitution.
It's time for Zimbabwe to define its own destiny, democracy, and political culture, which is totally divorced from:
- Toxicity
- Polarity
- Disputes
- Heartbreaks
- Violence: real, imagined, or exaggerated
- Misinformation and disinformation that often emanate from foreign observer missions.
The bill also seeks to create a parliamentary process for the election of the president. This democratic principle is not new. Some parts of Africa and elsewhere beyond our continent practice it and have proven to be an effective way to eliminate disputes.
If our Parliament can have the power to impeach and remove a sitting president from office, the same Parliament can also have the power to choose and elect a president.
On a lighter note: If Africa welcomed the decision by the Confederation of African Football to move the Africa Cup of Nations cycle from 2 years to 4 years, surely nobody should oppose our own democratic process.
We support and endorse the proposed amendments that seek to align our constitution with the modern world and, in particular, mitigate against the forces and negative effects of neo-colonialism. We believe the constitution is the first line of defence.
The bill is also financially minded, as it moves to cut costs and bureaucratic processes in handling future elections. Duplication of duties and services should be eliminated. This is exactly what is expected to be achieved by this bill.
This bill also seeks to give the nation more time to breathe and develop. Constant election bickering is an unwelcome luxury we cannot afford. Our hands are full of problems induced by over 2 decades of brutal unilateral sanctions.
We honour and salute our President, HE Dr ED Mnangagwa, for his stern stance against sanctions and his tireless efforts in safeguarding our national interests and developing the nation despite the ruinous sanctions.
Elections frighten and chase away investors. It is the draconian ZIDERA law that instils fear among foreign investors who have always resorted to overcomply with its dictates.
The US Congress is currently seeking to repeal the "Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act" (ZIDERA) under section 303 of H.R 5300, the "Department of State Policy Provisions Act". We applaud and appreciate this development.
Here at home, unfortunately, we have an opposition that talks and sings about reforms they don't even know about. Constitutional Amendment No.3 Bill is packed with crucial electoral reforms, and surprisingly, they just oppose.
Western nations are reaping what they sow. Their brutal and wicked punitive sanctions produced a divided and disorganised opposition
Some voluntarily ejected themselves from our esteemed Parliament of Zimbabwe, where laws and reforms are enacted and implemented. Some also ejected themselves from the party they formed.
An opposition which begged for wicked sanctions that displaced millions of our people from their homes, sanctions that have brought and exacerbated all kinds of immorality, prostitution, drug abuse and in the process, Zimbabweans lost their dignity and self-esteem. An opposition that boasts about sanctions as a necessary weapon for them to gain power.
Zimbabwe is the land of the brave who respect the values of their sovereignty. Indeed, Zimbabwe is not a land of cowards.
The benefits of this Constitutional Amendment No.3 Bill, by far outweigh the negative and uninformed concerns by traitors and detractors of this nation.
