🚨CABLE THEFT SUSPECT APPREHENDED🚨
Last night at 23:33, one of our street cameras in Tiverton Road, Plumstead area triggered an alert to our control room, showing a suspicious individual tampering with a manhole. Our armed response unit attended immediately to investigate, but the suspect had already left the scene.
Our Operations Manager anticipated that he would return and instructed the control room to keep a close eye on the area. 📹
At 02:34, a second trigger came through. Our controllers saw that the suspects were back, now two of them, and our armed response units were dispatched without delay. 🚔
A foot chase followed over the railway line. One suspect was apprehended at the scene, while the second managed to escape. A cable, a hacksaw and a pair of pruning shears were recovered.
The apprehended suspect was handed over to SAPS, who attended the scene and took him into custody.
Cable theft costs our community dearly. It disrupts electricity, communication and rail services and puts our neighbourhoods at risk. When a camera, a control room and a response team work as one, the community is safer. 💪
