Nominations for Proteas of Mzansi 2026 are now open!

Nation Builder’s Proteas of Mzansi initiative celebrates South Africa’s unsung heroines—women who serve their communities with courage, compassion, resilience and commitment.

These are the women behind the work of community upliftment: the changemakers, caregivers, leaders and bridge-builders whose impact deserves to be seen, honoured and amplified.

Selected Proteas will be celebrated in the Western Cape through a meaningful day of honour, including a professional photoshoot and official ceremony. Each honouree will also receive one year of complimentary Nation Builder membership, connecting them to a national network of changemakers, resources and collaborative opportunities.

If you know an inspirational woman working in the social impact space, nominate her for Proteas of Mzansi 2026 today.

Let’s celebrate the women whose service is helping to build a stronger South Africa.

Join the National Movement: Strengthen Child Protection Through Collaboration!💚

The 2026 Child Protection Month campaign, led by the South African Government and launched on May 3rd, is united under the powerful theme: 'Working together in ending violence against children.' This national effort relies on intersectoral collaboration—uniting government, civil society, development partners, community structures, and families—to promote the rights, safety, and well-being of every child.

As part of this shared responsibility, Nation Builder, in partnership with Arise, invites NPOs and child-facing teams to our practical 2026 Child Protection Workshop Series. This series offers interactive, practical workshops designed to empower NPOs and child-facing teams with essential tools to strengthen child safeguarding practices.

🗓Upcoming Workshops: (CPD accreditation pending with the SACSSP)
20 August 2026 | Child Protection & Safeguarding: Build the Foundation by mastering safeguarding principles, legal frameworks, and practical responsibilities.

17 September 2026 | Beyond the Policy: Ensure long-term success by embedding safeguarding into your daily practice, systems, and team behaviours.

We’re excited to highlight our Emerging Evaluator, Lebo Nchachi, who will moderate a panel at gLOCAL Eval Week.

Co‑creation and co‑learning shape how we work and lead. We’re proud to see Lebo take on this role and represent Nation Builder’s commitment to practical, equitable evaluation in the social sector.

The panel will explore how AI can strengthen evaluation capacity, improve data‑driven decision‑making, and reinforce M&E systems in resource‑constrained settings, while assessing time- and cost-saving opportunities in analysis and reporting.

Join members, partners and stakeholders online on Wednesday, 03 June from 12:00–13:30 for “The Role of AI in Building Evaluation Capacity in Resource‑Constrained Settings,” hosted by the South African Monitoring and Evaluation Association Emerging Evaluators. April Midday Mingles: Succession Secrets from KZN to WC 🌟

We wrapped up an epic two weeks, mingling with amazing organisations in our membership network—from KwaZulu-Natal to the Western Cape! Midday Mingles delivered high-energy chats on mentorship, resilience, and passing the baton.

In KZN, Mickey Wilkins, founder of Domino Business, shared his story—building Domino Foundation, handing it over, and mentoring everyone around him. Challenge accepted: Get mentored, mentor others, and plan your succession. Golden nugget: "Replace your function, not your personality."

The Western Cape Midday Mingle was hosted at our member, Orchard: Africa, based in Somerset West. Marietjie Steyn, founder of Aitsa! After Care Centre in Kylemore discussed staying "rooted in humility".

Succession tips? Character first; skills will follow. Invite successors into the messy bits to build resilience, create grace-filled spaces for gutsy creativity, keep sharing your why, and spot who's running alongside you. Mantras: "You have to be replaceable," "It's a relational journey," and "Don't grip the baton too tight—you might hold back your next level!"

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us—the energy and insights were unforgettable!

🖊️How are you making yourself replaceable? Drop your succession story below and inspire the network!

It’s always such a pleasure to connect with fellow changemakers in Gauteng. This week was no different as we hosted our Midday Mingle and In Good Company Connect events in the province.

Exclusively for Nation Builder members, the Midday Mingle provided a valuable opportunity to engage with peers in the social impact sector. Attendees enjoyed an insightful presentation by Erik van den Top of The Love Trust, shared best practices, and built meaningful relationships to drive collective impact in their communities.

Meanwhile, CSI managers explored our 2026 theme of “Unpacking Collective Impact”, exchanging insights with peers, strengthening partnerships, and discussing aligned strategies for sustainable investments.

Feedback highlighted invaluable networking, learning about each other's organisations, and an overall positive and productive experience. Thank you to all who attended—we look forward to future gatherings.

Join us on 05 May 2026 from 08:00 - 09:00 in KwaZulu-Natal and 10:00 - 11:00 in Gauteng and the Western Cape as we set aside time to pray for the people and organisations driving positive change across South Africa’s social impact sector.

These dedicated individuals and teams are often on the frontlines, tackling poverty, inequality, education, and healthcare.

This gathering is a moment to pause, reflect, and offer our collective support through prayer. We’ll be lifting prayers for strength, wisdom, perseverance, and the practical resources needed to sustain this vital work. We’ll also be holding space for those who may feel discouraged, overwhelmed, or unseen in their efforts.

Whether you work in the sector, support it from afar, or simply feel called to pray, you are warmly welcome.

Resilience is Resistance 🌟

Social workers face tough realities—high caseloads, limited resources, vicarious trauma, and often inadequate support. At our recent Social Worker Initiative in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), Dr Velo Govender, a private practice social worker and chairperson of Ubuntu Community Chest, reminded attendees that ‘Resilience is Resistance’. She highlighted warning signs of burnout and shared her five pillars for sustaining yourself while serving others: healthy boundaries between work and personal life, regular reflective supervision, strong peer and team support, restorative self-care practices, and reconnecting with your purpose.

The room buzzed with a lively discussion on workplace energy drains and boosters, swapping tips for rest, support, and boundaries. Everyone agreed: self-care is a critical ethical obligation.

After brunch and networking, Professor Mariette van der Merwe from North-West University facilitated the Journal Club, where social workers could earn continuous professional development points required in the profession.

We’re grateful to every social worker who joined us in KZN. Your hard work and dedication to improving the social impact sector don’t go unnoticed.

Key highlights included:
🚀Insights from Marlene Coetzee-George (CEO, Laureus Sport for Good Foundation South Africa) on leadership transition and succession planning
🚀Open discussions on tracking progress, developing emerging leaders, and strengthening governance practices
🚀Strategic exercises to map the steps needed for long-term sustainability in the sector.
