Pangolin Trivia Answer! 🥐

How long is a Temminck's pangolin's gestation period?

C) Around 140 days

That's roughly 4 and a half months of pregnancy, all to bring just one single pup into the world. Because pangolins only ever have one offspring at a time, and only once a year at most, population recovery after poaching losses is painfully slow, another reason every rescued female matters so much.

📷This little guy in the photo is Archie, born while his mother was in the hands of his captors, the stress of captivity is believed to have triggered her labour early. Archie arrived smaller than a can of coke and had to be hand raised from birth. Today, he's been successfully released and is living completely wild and free, proof of just how far dedicated care can carry even the smallest, most fragile lives.

There's a Place for You in the Scales Conservation Club 🥐

Every rescue, every rehabilitation, every soft release back into the wild takes ongoing funding, not just a once off effort. That's exactly why the Scales Conservation Club exists: it's our monthly giving community, and it's one of the most powerful ways to support pangolins in trouble, month after month.

Your monthly contribution gives the team reliable, predictable funding to plan around, covering things like rescue call outs, ICU & rehabilitation care, vet visits & the ongoing costs of caring for pangolins until they're ready to go it alone. That kind of consistent backing is what turns emergency rescues into real, lasting recovery.

There's a tier for every budget, starting from just R50/month right up to R5,000 each unlocking extra perks along the way: exclusive access to The Scales Chronicles blog, digital newsletters, early access to the Scales Conservation Club digital magazine & more.

While the Club supports all of Scales' work, every member helps keep pangolin rescue efforts funded & ready to respond, whenever the next call comes in.

Ready to become part of it? Pick your tier & sign up here 👉 www.scales.org.za/scales-conservation-club

Myths vs Facts 🥐

❌Myth: Pangolins are reptiles.
✅Fact: Despite their scaly, armour-plated appearance, pangolins are mammals through and through, they give birth to live young and nurse their pups, just like any other mammal.

The confusion is understandable, their overlapping scales do look a lot like reptile armour at first glance. But those scales are made of keratin (the same material as human hair and nails), not the bony or h***y material reptile scales are made from, and structurally, they're worlds apart.

So next time someone insists a pangolin looks "basically like a scaly lizard," you'll know exactly why that's not quite right!

Meet Denny 🥐

It's time to introduce you to the second pangolin rescued a couple of weeks ago, Denny.

Sadly, his condition was far worse than Lotti's. This beautiful male had been held captive for at least 10 days, ten days without the freedom to forage, roam, and live the life he was born to live. He was found closed inside a crate, locked shut with wire, too small for him to even unroll his body. By the time he was rescued, he was severely emaciated, weak, and covered in wounds across his body.

ALL PANGOLINS ARE HOUSED AND TREATED OFF-SITE AT UNDISCLOSED SECURE LOCATIONS

Denny spent time in ICU receiving treatment and supplemental feeding, and we're glad to share that he has since moved into rehabilitation, another important step forward in his recovery.

Despite everything he's endured, Denny has shown a gentle, sweet natured side through it all, almost as if he knows the hands helping him now are there to help, not harm. He still has a long road ahead, but the team will be with him every step of the way as he continues to heal.

Thank you to everyone who played a part in giving Denny this second chance. Limpopo Pangolin Collective Hoedspruit Animal Hospital - ProVet & Umoya Khulula Wildlife Centre

We'll continue sharing updates as he and Lotti both work their way back to the wild.
