Remembering the Rescued: Nonna 🥐

Some of our older followers may remember Nonna, but for our many new friends here, let us introduce you to one of the most remarkable pangolins the team has ever cared for.

Nonna was admitted back in May 2021 after a community leader, who had received her as a gift, made the right call and handed her over to the authorities. Her condition on arrival wasn't the worst we've seen; but she went on to become one of the most challenging cases the team has faced.

Nonna's road to recovery was nothing short of miraculous. She faced complication after complication during her rehabilitation, and there were moments when the team genuinely feared they might lose her; she pulled through from the brink not once, but three separate times. Through it all, her sheer determination, matched by the tireless dedication of the team, saw her through every single setback.

After nearly two years of intensive, round the clock care, Nonna was finally strong enough to begin her release in March 2023. She has since settled beautifully into her wild home; even through harsh winters, she's kept finding enough food to stay in great condition, earning herself the nickname "chunky monkey" from the team who love her. Today, Nonna is living her best wild life; no tracking devices, no health check ups, just an uninterrupted wild life, exactly as nature intended.

Nonna's story is proof of just how much determination, both hers and the team's, can achieve. We couldn't be prouder of this incredible girl and everyone who fought alongside her.

Kevin and Loreen McDonald, local authors and passionate advocates for African wildlife, are launching their beautiful new children's book, "P is for Pangolin: An African Animal Alphabet" 🌺

Join them at The (little) Bookshop as they share the story behind the book, their love for our continent's animals, and Loreen reads a little of it aloud. Kids are more than welcome, they're encouraged!

Best part? Proceeds from every book sold go straight towards pangolin conservation. Our founder, Amy will be there on the day too, so come say hi and ask us anything about our pangolins.

Tonight's the night 🥐

Our partners at Umoya Khulula Wildlife Centre have shared something truly special; "Footprints to Freedom" by Kuru, an artwork created in connection with the rescue and rehabilitation of a pangolin in their care.

**This piece was produced under controlled conditions within rehabilitation care, not in the wild, under the supervision of species specialist Emma De Jager.**

Watch the story behind the artwork; from rescue, through rehabilitation, to the survivor's journey towards the day it can walk free again. Then look at it again. Those aren't just footprints, they represent a journey back to freedom.

Tonight, "Footprints to Freedom" goes under the hammer at A Call From The Wild, a special exhibition & auction evening at Warren Cary Wildlife Gallery, supporting pangolin rescue, rehabilitation and conservation.

Did You Know? 🥐

Temminck’s pangolin pups start becoming independent much earlier than many people realise.

After birth, the single pup stays close to its mother for the first few months, riding on the base of her tail or back, sharing her burrows, and learning to forage. By around 3–6 months of age, the pup begins to feed more independently while still remaining in its mother’s home range.

Around 12 months old, young Temminck’s pangolins typically disperse further afield to find and establish their own territories.

This relatively early independence is one of the reasons successful soft releases of young pangolins are so carefully managed, they need enough time and space to develop the skills and confidence to survive on their own in the wild.
