Koru Camp Koru Camp is a non-profit educational eco tented camp in the Greater Kruger region of Limpopo. It is a deep rooted issue, and one where we are trying to help.

Our vision is to empower underprivileged local communities through education and foster meaningful connection to nature and wildlife. Our Story:
Koru Camp was born from the dire need for true wilderness access for the local underprivileged communities. 27 years on from Apartheid and there is still a stark and sad imbalance in the access of true African wilderness for black South African's, even those living in wilderness communities surrounded by private game reserves. Without meaningful access to the bush, how can we develop a connection to, and love for, the Wilderness? And how can we develop a reverence and work to protect our wilderness if we do not know it? There are many game reserves offering day visits and game drives to programs for local communities organised by non-profit organisations, however overnight stays are either not possible or not affordable. There is already a large group of non profit organisations working tirelessly on this issue and supporting the community as best they can as part of their community outreach in the Hoedspruit area, however their work is being is hampered by their lack of access to overnight camps within game reserves. We have built an eco tented camp within a private game reserve in the Greater Kruger. This camp is non-profit and its sole purpose is to host our local communities through various organisations and their existing programs as well as our own. Koru Camp is a true wilderness camp in the middle of the bush, and is as an educational and inspirational space for local communities to experience the African bush.

Lesego spent much of her childhood at her grandmother’s home in Acornhoek, just outside Kruger. This Women’s Month, she came back to the area to lead our Lioness Leadership Camp 🦁

In a new post on our blog, Lesego (:Lesego Mthethwa🤎) writes about guiding a group of young women through their first real taste of conservation. She used female lions, cheetahs, leopards and spotted hyenas to show them different ways of leading, and she left them with one simple message: “Be like the lioness.”

On 30 September, we celebrated the learners behind the Rhino Art Project, which we launched with Kingsley Holgate Foundation 🎨

In all, 173 learners from The Timbavati Foundation and Global Conservation Corps took part. Their posters were full of elephants, rhinos and messages in their own words, all under the line “Let our voices be heard”. The top 20 earned a special visit to Koru Camp, and the top five each took home an educational hamper.

Kingsley Holgate and our founder, Peter Eastwood, presented the awards together, and the group photo afterwards was all smiles.

Pete also joined Kingsley at Barreta Primary School for a Right to Sight day 👓 Working with Hlokomela, the team offered eye screenings to elderly community members who find it hard to get to an optometrist. Those who needed reading glasses went home with a pair, and food parcels from The Do More Foundation including sorghum porridge, were handed out as well.

The Ubuntu Girls Camp, brought to us by The Timbavati Foundation , started off quietly and ended with plenty of smiles 🙌

Most of this group were primary school learners, and they took a little while to settle in. As the day went on, they started joining in properly, and the morning yoga session on the deck was a clear favourite. It was led by Vinolia, who usually runs our kitchen. This was her first time teaching yoga to a group, and you’d never have guessed it 🧘

At the long table, learners chose their beads by colour, with each one standing for something different: red for strength, yellow for intelligence and pink for compassion. Once the strength bracelets were finished, the whole group brought their fists together in a circle to show them off.

Out on drive, they spotted a yellow-bellied sand snake, a few vultures and a pair of lions resting in the grass. Then it was down to the river for sundowners, mugs in hand, as the sky turned gold 🌅

Our Mambas in the Park learners from Global March for Elephants and Rhinos and The Black Mambas spent three days at Koru, looking up at the sky as often as they looked around them ✨

This camp focused on ecology and astronomy, and the game drives gave us plenty of chances to link the two. Lunghisane and Acacia led the workshops at the long table. Under the trees, learners built bottle models filled with soil, grass and leaves, then watched what happened to the water running through each one.

The nights stayed clear, so after dark the learners turned to the stars. They picked out constellations and heard how these were traditionally used to mark the changing seasons for farming.

The bush gave them plenty to see as well. A male lion stared back at us through the branches, and a giraffe stood out against the last light of the evening. The leopard came and went so fast that nobody got a photo, but every learner saw it 🐆

A bit of rain was never going to slow down 24 learners from South African Medical Exp 🌧️

Over two nights at Koru Camp, the group threw themselves into everything, from memory games at the long table to a hoop challenge that needed every hand in the circle to stay linked. When the weather turned, the ponchos came out and the whole crew still lined up on the deck for a photo 🫶

The drives delivered breeding herds of elephants, giraffe, kudu and a leopard tortoise took its time crossing through the undergrowth. Then came an African rock python, coiled on a fallen log in the rain just metres from the vehicle. On the final drive out, a herd of buffalo gave them one last send-off 🐃

Our Eco Champs from The Timbavati Foundation hopped off the game drive vehicle for a closer look at the riverbank 👣

Bongani took them out for a short walk along the river, stopping to crouch over tracks and work out who had passed through before them. As they went, he talked them through the wild space they were standing in and how it all fits together.

We're still smiling about this group 🙌

Our first Boys Camp with Khula Roots brought us young men who arrived ready for anything and kept that energy from start to finish. One evening, Harrison from the Integrated School Health Programme sat down with them for an open conversation about reproductive health, contraception and fatherhood.

The bush did its part too. That leopard beside the road at Sashwa kopje, just as we were leaving, is going to be hard to beat 🐆

Happy Heritage Day from all of us at Koru Camp 🇿🇦

The Greater Kruger is part of South Africa's natural heritage and giving local communities access to it is what Koru was set up to do back in 2022.

Wild dogs on a dirt road, marula trees and lions calling at night are part of South Africa's heritage too, and we think every learner should get to experience them for themselves. That's what our camps are about. Learners spend a few days out in the reserve with our guides, and they go home knowing the bush a little better and forming a real love for this wild corner of the country.

Our first ever Boys Camp with Khula Roots is a wrap, and what a group to host 🙌

These young men threw themselves into every part of the programme. Harrison, a professional nurse with the Integrated School Health Programme in the Bushbuckridge sub-district, joined us for a night to talk through how the male and female reproductive systems work, contraception and what it means to be a father. At the long table, each learner built a Life Shield, picking the animals that stand for their own values and adding a motto to match.

The bush put on a show for them too. One morning a pack of wild dogs was out scouting along the road, and later we found lions, first roaring, then fast asleep. On the way out, right beside the road at Sashwa kopje, we joined a leopard with an impala carcass. Quite the send-off 🐆

The Koru crew practising for a brand new activity: Operation Rescue, which we'll be unveiling on our first boys' camp currently underway with Khula Roots🥳

Every game at Koru starts with a question: what do we actually want learners to walk away with? Not just a fun afternoon, but something that sticks. The Dung Beetle Game, blindfolded and led only by a teammate's voice, builds trust before it builds anything else. The Nest Building Challenge tests whether what you've made can actually hold an egg, which turns out to be a pretty fast lesson in problem solving. Even Animal Charades gets learners thinking about behaviour, not just names and facts.

Operation Rescue is built the same way: teamwork under pressure, quick thinking, and a real reason to care about the animals they're learning about. We can't wait to see it in action.
