*HERMANUS NIGHT SHELTER - SECURITY & CCTV SYSTEM REVAMP*

A huge thank-you to *OLITRON* : Doug Batchelor (Rotary District Governor-Elect & Olitron Owner) and Andre Nieuwoudt (Olitron Technical Engineer) for the incredible CCTV and Security System upgrade at the *Hermanus Night Shelter.*

This important initiative was led by Garth Humphries from Rotary Club of Hermanus.

The generous revamp and installation of the new security system and cameras will greatly strengthen the safety, security and dignity of everyone who relies on the shelter.

This is community partnership at its best: professionals giving their time, expertise and care to uplift those most in need.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT AND CARE ON MANDELA DAY

The Hermanus community stepped up again to support the Night Shelter on Mandela Day & we were overwhelmed by the support shown.

Friday was a busy day with several donations received. The day started early with Coca-Cola arriving and providing 50 Coke cans, soup, chips and rolls. We spent some time talking to the management team and handing out items to our clients. During the morning, a group of ladies brought knitted scarves that had been made to keep everyone warm. We also had a visit from Sportsmans Warehouse team who came in and brought clients socks and toiletries. As well as that, a group of young adults from Zwelihle donated clothes for adults and children.

The day was certainly not over after a busy morning. Abalone farms brought us 12 hampers of food which will add to our pantry supply that we appealed for last week. In addition, we had food & sandwiches donated by ladies from Village Square, a group from Nelson Mandela fund and Hermanus Staan Saam as well. Thank you all for your generous time and donation give to the Night Shelter.

Because some of the donations given were more than the number of clients we have at the moment; we could support our local community in Mount Pleasant as we asked some of the needy and elderly to come into the Night Shelter. The staff gave food and bread to them as a gesture of goodwill & to also ensure that they had a special day.

On Saturday, our clients volunteered to give back to the Night Shelter by helping to clean up and sort out donations received at the Night Shelter. A lunch of rolls and chicken was kindly provided by Sue Antonie. The day ended with a generous meal of hamburgers provided by Chard restaurant to all clients and staff.

Everyone was so blessed & filled. The staff, Governing Body & clients would like to thank everyone who made Mandela Day a special day at the Hermanus Night Shelter!

Our pantry drive!

A big thank you to our Hermanus community for supporting our recent appeal for food donations during this cold winter. Our near empty shelves are now nearly full and we look forward to providing a breakfast that will sustain our clients during the day (the clients have a hot meal in the evenings & we try to give them a substantial breakfast that will last them through lunch to their next dinner again - not easy in this cold weather! 🥶)
We received a number of donations from all over Hermanus.
Many people were unknown to us and just popped in with food items to support us.
We are encouraged to continue our important work knowing we have community support.
🍳🍚If you would like to support our breakfast drive - we need fresh fruit like naatjies, oranges etc, porridge/oats/pap, sugar for the porridge, milk, Ricoffy for warm cup before they leave, Ceylon teabags, jam, peanut butter, eggs & any long life cans etc. ☕️🍊

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
Our Dinner-dance & auction at the Golf Club on July 3rd was a roaring success & an event placed on the local calendar not to be missed next year! 110 people sat at tables that a host/hostess sold 10 tickets/table to their friends. People from Shofar Church, Ocean Basket, Harley Davidson group (Cape Town - HOGS), the staff & their partners as well as each of the Committee members sold tables of 10 guests. The food was the best that people had ever tasted from JT of 2 Chefs at the Golf Club (Thank you JT!).
Werner was a brilliant in promptu auctioneer & Sue Raven was MC (being Head of Fundraising on the Committee).

HELPING THOSE IN NEED

Staff at the night shelter are often faced with a variety of client issues and needs. The Hermanus Night Shelter is well placed to meet these various needs as we have 2 staff with social work training. It is not our policy to normally accept clients who are on psychiatric medication.

Recently a client was admitted to the Night Shelter and did not disclose that she was receiving psychiatric treatment and taking psychiatric medication. Through ongoing assessments, support, and the creation of a safe and trusting environment, she eventually felt comfortable enough to share her circumstances with our team.

As part of our intervention process, family reunification was identified as the preferred option. The client's family was contacted but after discussions the family unfortunately indicated that they were not in a position to welcome her back home at this time.

Following this outcome, the client became emotionally distressed and displayed disruptive behaviour. In response, she was referred to the Department of Health on two occasions for psychiatric evaluation and support.

In early June 2026, our Social Worker successfully facilitated a referral to Stikland Hospital (psychiatric hospital in Belville) for further assistance. We are pleased to share that the client has now been admitted to a four-week treatment program, where she will receive the professional care and support she requires. The transport costs to the hospital were made possible through the generosity and continued support of our community.

We would also like to remind our supporters and community members that the Hermanus Night Shelter provides accommodation for a maximum period of 90 days. During this time, our team works diligently with each client to explore sustainable solutions and pathways toward independence and stability.

Linen collection an overwhelming success

Our recent appeal for various bedding items was met with an overwhelming response from the community and we received many donations over the last month. A big thank you to ProMusica Choir for their support of vouchers for a linen shop, and to the Overstrand Biker community who collected blankets for Rotary to distribute. The night shelter received 30 blankets from rotary ths week ( see picture). All of our linen has been in use since we opened 4 years ago and so our recent additions will be put to good use.

All our existing linen has now been sorted and been repacked into our new laundry room which is large enough to store our enlarged linen stock. Previously our linen was stored in 3 or 4 rooms due to limited space at the shelter.

📌 Hermanus Night Shelter

Our non-profit organization is reaching out to our amazing community for support.

We are currently in need of pantry supplies to help families and individuals facing food insecurity. Donations of non-perishable items such as oats, rice, pasta, canned foods, jam, cereals, long-life milk, cooking oil, beans, tea, coffee, sugar and bread would be greatly appreciated.

Our water project has been completed. Donation of Water Tanks from the municipality have been installed in May and with the recent good rains, gives us 30 000 L. It should last 60 days in summer.
Thanks to the teams from the municipality, Garth from Rotary , Ian from the Governing Body and our own clients who did all the installation for us. In due course we plan to install a sprinkler system.

SUCCESSFULL INSTALLATION

💦We are pleased to tell our supporters that our water project for the garden has been completed in record time.
🚰Our recent donation of Water Tanks from the municipality have been installed in May and with the recent good rains we are pleased to report that they are all full.
🪣This gives us 30 000 L of collected rainwater which is estimated will last for 60 days in summer.
🔛The tanks have been connected to the existing pump and we can water our beds with a “rainwater” hosepipe.

🤝This was a team effort from the municipality, Garth from Rotary , Ian from the Governing Body and our own clients who did all the installation for us. In due course we plan to install a sprinkler system.

BLYK VAN WAARDERING AAN HERMANUS NIGHT SHELTER PERSONEEL

Graag wil ek die personeel van Hermanus shelter bedank vir hulle vriendelike hulp en bystand met my seun. Buiten al die ander personeel wat ook baie behulpsaam was, was Antoinette Bishop (SAW)die een wat uit haar pad gegaan het, deur haar private tyd en onkoste my op hoogte te hou oor my seun en sy welstand. Selfs toe hy nie daar kon slaap het hulle, hul nog steeds ontferm oor hom en ook moeite gemaak dat hy soms telefonies met hom inverbinding tree. Van al die shelters waar my seun woonagtig was, was Hermanus Night shelter se personeel die enigste wat regtig omgee vir hul mense wat daar woonagtig is. Dit is bewys dat hulle daai ekstra myl loop om te help met rehalibitasie, groepsessies en ondersteuning. My seun doen goed en dinge lyk positief vir die eerste keer in n langtyd deur die feit dat hy deur die span met metwaardigheid,liefde, geduld en respek. Ek is so dankbaar dat daar nog mense in hierdie wrede wereld is wat nog omgee vir hul medemens. Hermanus shelter se personeel verdien n goue medalje vir die diens wat hulle lewer aan die gemeenskap. Hou die blink kant bo Hermanus personeel. Julle maak n groot verskil in mense se lewens. Van n moeder met n blye hart.
