A beautiful performance by the Stellenbosch City Orchestra.

Conducted by Paul van Zuilenberg, and featuring solo singers Vasti Knoesen, Janel Speelman, Corneil Muller and André Terblanché, the orchestra also included one of WCSO's own, Kobus van Wyk playing the trumpet.

This event took place on Saturday the 8th of November at the Endler Hall at Stellenbosch university and was a skilfully performed Christmas Festival concert, featuring festive favouritessuch as Tchaikovsky’s Sugar Plum Fairy, O Come All Ye Faithful and White Christmas, as well as other non-seasonal pieces such as Carl Jenkin’s Benedictus, Swing Low Sweet Chariot and Greensleeves.

Last night's recital by Filippo Gorini in the Endler Hall in Stellenbosch included the premiere of Federico Gardella Sonata, Schumann’s Kreisleriana, and Schubert’s Sonata D960.

He said: "Playing this music here now carries a very particular emotional load, a unique colour, and it feels like with [this] concert all the threads opened in my stay in South Africa come together. I offer this recital to everyone with gratitude towards a country that has made me feel welcome, and where I am sure I will come back to many times!"

Symphony magic strikes all the right notes

The Whale Coast Symphony Orchestra made A Night at the Symphony one to remember, bringing the house down at a packed Municipal Auditorium in Hermanus on Saturday.

The 35-strong ensemble treated the audience to a selection of popular, classical and contemporary works by composers such as Léo Delibes, Astor Piazzolla, Florence Price and Henry Mancini, under the baton of Harry Attwood.

Now in its second year performing, the Hermanus-based community orchestra, which features adult members as well as school-age players from as far afield as Betty’s Bay, Caledon and Kleinmond, has gone from strength to strength and built a solid base of support.

Its next public performance, Classical Rendezvous, will be held at Hermanus High School on 23 October.

So excited to showcase the work of father-and-son photographic team Johan and Stefan Botha, taken at A Night At The Symphony on 23 August. Their sensitive studies perfectly illustrate the focus and collaborative effort behind the performance. We hardly noticed him and Stefan as they captured the moment. Thank you both for your time, effort and expertise. You are amazing!

What an evening! We hope you all enjoyed A Night At The Symphony at Hermanus Civic Auditorium as much as we loved playing. The orchestra were all smiles as they took a bow at the end of the show and we're really looking forward to our next public performance, for the Classical Rendezvous at Hoërskool Hermanus High School on 23 October.

Huge thanks to our volunteers: Aaron, Adolf, Andrew, Clinton, Corlia and Kobus for their sterling support front of house, to Elsie and partner for the teas and coffees, Creation Wines for the kind donation quaffed by everyone afterwards, Stefan Botha Studios for the awesome photographs, everyone who worked behind the scenes to make this event possible – and of course, the audience, without whom we would have no-one to perform to.
