Yesterday the 15th of October 2026, Masi Creative Hub, in partnership with the The Southern Africa Food Lab, hosted a Youth Dialogue in recognition of World Food Day 2026. Young people came together to envision a healthier, and food-secure Masiphumelele.

The message was clear: youth must take the lead! From promoting healthy eating to reclaiming green spaces and creating opportunities, building a nourished Masi starts with us.

“If you want the change, you must make the change in yourself.” 💚🌍

The installation of the recycled Baobab Tree, generously donated by Freeman, was a success! 🌳💚 The installation was accompanied by our Garden Champions Mentoring Programme, held during the school holidays and attended by 18 learners.

We’re also excited to share that all the garden strips adopted by companies in support of our after-school programme are producing, and harvesting has officially begun! 🥬🍅🌿

🌱💚 Growing Garden Champions, Growing a Greener Masi!

Through Masi Creative Hub, our Garden Champions, led by Lwando Siboninge, are inspiring Grade 6–9 learners to grow their own food, care for their gardens, and nurture a stronger community. 🌱🥬

We are proud to have 112 gardens in total, including our school gardens, which continue to improve and help provide fresh, nutritious food that contributes to better meals for children. 🥕🥬🍅

Even during the school holidays, the children continue to show incredible commitment by maintaining their gardens. Tomorrow, 29 September, they will install a beautiful recycling baobab tree at Ukhanyo P.S., generously donated by Susan Freeman. 🌳♻️

We remain committed to making food more accessible while empowering our children to become champions of a greener, healthier Masi. 🌍💚

67 Minutes for Mandela Day 💚🌱

Although we celebrated a little later than 18 July, the spirit of Mandela Day was alive today.🇿🇦

Mama Yandi was inspired by the incredible number of young men who showed up to give their 67 minutes of service. Together, they maintained our adopted garden strip while learning practical gardening skills and the value of caring for their community.

Growing Impact, One Tree at a Time 🌳

At the recent We Are Africa event, we were proud to see Ryan Wallace purchase the first recycled plastic Baobab Tree of Love, Joy and Peace, handcrafted by Mama Yandi, and adopt it for Ukhanyo Primary School’s food garden.

This initiative supports our local fundraising efforts to sustain the Masiphumelele Creative Hub programs. It’s part of a bigger vision: to build a Food Lab in our center where kids can learn hands-on about nutrition, growing, and food systems.

We’re also expanding our Nourished Child awareness sessions with Grade R & 1 and Grade 6 & 7, so more learners can connect what they grow to what they eat and why it matters.

Thank you to Ryan Wallace for leading this act of adoption, and to the Are Africa team and Escape + Explore for inviting and hosting us. We’re grateful to be part of a network that backs community-led growth and creativity.
