🎉 Celebrating 75 years of 🇦🇺 Australians volunteering overseas alongside our partner, the Australian Volunteers Program!

Our General Manager, Anthony Ghillino, reflects on what the partnership has meant to QAWC.

Over the past decade, our partnership with the Australian Volunteers Program has fostered cross-cultural connections, encouraged knowledge sharing and strengthened our capacity to drive locally led change.

Our latest Australian volunteer, Nikki Vu, is working alongside our team to build our online presence through strategic communications and lived experience storytelling.

Our members are at the heart of everything we do, from the services we provide to our advocacy for their rights and inclusion. That’s why we’re committed to creating content that amplifies their voices and reflects their experiences.

Nikki has been a valuable addition to our team, helping us bring these stories to life and connect with our community through our digital channels.

♿ Accessible parking bays provide extra space for people with mobility impairments to enter and exit their vehicles safely, helping make public spaces more accessible.

Following World Mental Health Day over the weekend, we are reflecting on this year's theme, 'Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change' and highlighting the importance of mental health for people living with spinal cord injury (SCI).

Dr. Scriba, who specialises in SCI rehabilitation, recently joined our SCI peer support group to discuss common SCI complications, share clinical insights and offer practical advice on managing health and wellbeing. Participants also shared their lived experiences, highlighting how professional expertise and peer connection both play an important role in supporting people living with SCI.

Thank you to Coloplast for partnering with us to make these support group sessions possible at Vincent Pallotti Hospital’s Life Rehabilitation Unit and online.

“You need to adjust your care to each individual. I always say that I am the world leading authority on me. No one knows me like I do. I’ve been around for every transfer, every bowel movement, whatever there is to do with me. I was there. So empower your clients to be the leading authority on themselves because they are going to have to get through life with their disability.” — Anthony Ghillino, QAWC General Manager.

Today, Anthony joined Coloplast and Faircape Health Institute's in-service training for nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers and other healthcare professionals.

Anthony shared his perspective as a wheelchair user living with spinal cord injury, offering valuable insight into the patient experience and the importance of informed, compassionate and tailored care. Anthony also highlighted the value of peer support in bridging the gap between the technical skills of healthcare professionals and the lived experience of clients.

From facilitating peer support groups to speaking at training sessions with healthcare professionals, we're proud of our ongoing partnership with Coloplast to help build greater understanding of the experiences and healthcare needs of people living with spinal cord injury.

At QAWC, we support three residential care facilities run by wheelchair users for wheelchair users including Andries Olivier Durbanville Quadriplegic Centre, also known as 🏡 Huis Andries Olivier.

At their recent AGM, Huis Andries Olivier welcomed their 2026-2027 Management Board:
🔸 Andrew Grobler – Chairman
🔸 Sihle Fela – Vice Chairman
🔸 Terence Moore – Treasurer
🔸 Jean van der Merwe – Secretary

The residential facilities operate under a self-help model where residents actively participate in the management and day-to-day operations of their home. This unique model fosters a sense of ownership and empowerment while supporting residents' independence and community engagement.

We look forward to working alongside Huis Andries Olivier and wish the management board and fellow residents every success in the year ahead.

The Western Cape Network on Disability's AGM highlighted the importance of strengthening 🤝 collaboration across the disability sector to effectively advocate for disability rights.

It was a great opportunity to connect with representatives from a diverse range of disability organisations including Cape Mental Health, Enable Centre, Colour My World South Africa and many more.

Following the AGM, QAWC General Manager and WCND Chairperson, Anthony Ghillino, has a busy week of advocacy and engagement ahead.

Anthony will be visiting 🏫 schools in Ceres to promote disability inclusion and raise awareness of spinal cord injury prevention, before heading to Worcester to co-host the Network’s outreach and member engagement activities.

We are looking forward to sharing more from Anthony’s week on the 🚗 road. Stay tuned! 👀

♿ October is Mobility Month!

At QAWC, we work to break down 🚧 barriers that can limit mobility and access for wheelchair users.

Through QASA's 🚗 Driving Ambitions program, we help members learn to drive using vehicles adapted with hand controls and guidance from qualified instructors.

Eligible QAWC members who use power wheelchairs can also receive a free set of replacement 🔋 batteries every two years, thanks to the support of SABAT Batteries and QASA.

In addition, we advocate for more accessible transport infrastructure and services including Dial-a-Ride, beach wheelchairs and public sidewalks. We also deliver disability awareness and sensitivity training for ✈️ airport staff to build their confidence and understanding around supporting passengers with a disability.

Mobility is more than getting from A to B. It's about independence and having the opportunity to participate fully in everyday life.

The Western Cape Network on Disability (WCND) held their AGM today, bringing together a diverse range of organisations and individuals from across the disability sector to reflect on the Network’s achievements and look ahead to their future priorities.

Our General Manager, Anthony Ghillino is a leading disability rights advocate and has been serving as the Network’s Chairperson over the past year. In this role, Anthony has supported the Network’s advocacy for systemic change that promotes the full inclusion of persons with disabilities and recognition of their human rights.

The AGM also marked the 🎉 launch of the Network’s new website and directory, making it easier to find information and connect with disability organisations and service providers across the Western Cape.

We are excited to be featured in the Network’s directory as another way to connect with more wheelchair users and the wider disability community.

Together as a collective voice, we will continue advocating for a more accessible, inclusive future where everyone can participate fully and with dignity.

A wheelchair user since the age of 6, Irvin has built Siliziwe from a small operation of three employees into a team of more than 25, driven by resilience, passion and a commitment to creating opportunities for people of all abilities.
