Write4Life ran a writing workshop for On the Pulse, a multi-media collaboration between YearBeyond and Chrysalis Academy, Tokai. The theme was heritage, and the weekend was launched by a fantastic presentation by Jaline Btine from Museum Research and Exhibition Services. After that we lead participants through exploring aspects of their own stories. It was a fruitful workshop, and we look forward to putting together the work into a new anthology.

When we talk about literacy, the conversation often focuses on the early years. But what happens after children learn to read?

As literacy advocate Michelle Brown, founder of Commonlit.org writes: "We've convinced ourselves that when it comes to literacy education, adolescents matter less."

The truth is, teenagers still need opportunities to grow as readers and writers. They need books that reflect their lives, spaces to express themselves, and adults who continue to invest in their literacy journey.

We believe it's never too late to nurture a love of reading and writing. Every story read, every poem written, and every voice encouraged helps young people build confidence, think critically, and imagine new possibilities.

Let's stop treating literacy as something that ends in primary school. Our teenagers deserve our attention too.

Write4Life is working with the Nika Foundation based at Masiphumelele High, to promote literacy and reading and writing for pleasure with their grade 8s and 9s. We believe that exciting local content is vital to get teens hooked on reading, and with our print resources – the popular funzines – and our free online reading courses on fundza.mobi – we have got all bases covered! We had a short training with the facilitators on how to use the funzines and the courses, and early reports indicate that the teens are enjoying the content. This is a pilot, and so we look forward to learning what worked – and what didn’t - so we can roll it out more broadly.

Words have the power to unlock imagination, build confidence, and inspire young writers—and that's exactly what Write4Life's Word Play cards are designed to do.

🎨 This vibrant set of 104 bilingual (English & isiXhosa) cards helps intermediate phase learners expand their vocabulary while having fun with storytelling, poetry, and creative writing. Perfect for Grade 4 learners transitioning to English, the cards are colour-coded into:

Learning to Breathe Again…

Through our partnership with Literacy Association of South Africa, Write4Life took part in a series of workshops run by Library and Information Services together with City Health, Project Exodus and Action Change.

The workshops, titled Learning to Breathe Again: Empowering Voices Through Storytelling, were held at Southfield Library and guided participants from various rehabilitation initiatives to write their own stories. Across four sessions, participants reflected on and shared their experiences of hardship and change — creating an atmosphere of real intimacy and trust.

The pieces are currently being edited for compilation into an anthology. The process was so successful that a second series is already planned, this time at Tafelsig Public Library.
