💚🤗 Our Heart-Held Icon Project featured artist today is Joubert Stander, who received a bespoke Heart-Held Icon sculpture and transformed it into a powerful celebration of hope, opportunity, personal growth and the potential of young people.

Titled Blooming of a Future, the sculpture visualises the journey of young people stepping into their potential, reflecting how hope, hard work and the right support can transform aspirations into reality.

At the centre of the work is a black-and-white miniature portrait of a child in a quiet, contemplative moment — thinking, hoping and dreaming about what lies ahead. Around the heart, vibrant flowers and mythical plants emerge from the base, symbolising growth and the journey of young leaders as they discover what they are capable of becoming.

The large hands are painted a deep sky blue and reach upwards, representing the belief that the sky is the limit. By surrounding the heart with this colour, Joubert reflects the idea that, with the right support and opportunities, young people can overcome their circumstances and fulfil their potential.

💚🤗 The Heart-Held Icon Project featured artist today is Ingrid Uys, who received a bespoke Heart-Held Icon sculpture and transformed it into a delicate exploration of fragility, beauty, resilience and the fleeting nature of life.

Titled Held In Light, the sculpture captures a quiet, suspended moment through a gathering of translucent moths and butterflies. Appearing almost weightless, their fragile wings overlap to create a sense of both protection and vulnerability.

Through transparency, light and shadow, Held In Light explores the delicate balance between holding on and letting go. The fragile forms remind us that beauty can exist within things that are temporary, delicate and easily disrupted.

At the heart of the work is a quiet message of resilience, that fragility is not necessarily weakness, but can hold its own strength, beauty and meaning. The sculpture invites us to pause and reflect on the preciousness of what we hold, and the courage it sometimes takes to let go.

For Njabulo, leadership has been shaped by mentors, peers who challenge him, and learning to step outside his comfort zone. It’s taught him to lead with purpose and lift others as he grows.

The MAD Leadership Journey Series shares the real experiences of MAD Scholars as they navigate challenges, discover their strengths and grow into the leaders they have the potential to become. Each story connects to one or more of MAD’s eight Leadership competencies, from perseverance and self-discipline to courage, adaptability, citizenship and paying it forward.


Together, these stories bring the Leadership Journey to life, showing that leadership is not a destination, but a journey of becoming.

💚🤗 Our Heart-Held Icon Project featured artist this week is Aniek Nieuwenhuis, a MAD Alum, who received a bespoke Heart-Held Icon sculpture and transformed it into a deeply moving exploration of healing, hope and the human capacity to begin again.

Titled Event Horizon, the work takes its name from the boundary around a black hole, often understood as a point of no return. Aniek’s sculpture offers a powerful contradiction to this idea, reminding us that, when it comes to human healing, there is no such thing as a point of no return.

The materiality of the work speaks to the extraordinary capacity for growth and renewal. Cyanotypes of fynbos, created using sunlight, represent hope and the power of creation. Fynbos itself provides a powerful metaphor for resilience: many species rely on fire and destruction to germinate their seeds and release nutrients, allowing stronger regrowth to take place.

The torn cyanotype prints envelop the hands and heart, reflecting the small steps, vulnerability, empathy and connection required to rebuild after tragedy, trauma or grief. The cracks have deliberately been left visible and connected using the Japanese tradition of Kintsugi, where broken ceramics are repaired with gold rather than discarded. The imperfections are not hidden, but celebrated and transformed into part of the beauty.

Gold fynbos imprints have been layered onto the heart, with their brilliance flowing into the cracks of the hands that protect and hold it, a reminder that even through our deepest challenges, there is always the possibility of growth.

🎓♀️From a MAD Scholarship to Making Knowledge Accessible

Dr Kylie Marais' journey with MAD Leadership Foundation began in 2007.

As a first-generation university student, receiving a MAD scholarship gave her the financial freedom to pursue her studies and the confidence to believe in her academic potential. It also introduced her to mentorship, opportunities and a community that would continue to influence her long after her time as a scholar.

The years that followed took Kylie from her undergraduate studies to a PhD in Feminist Anthropology, where she explored women's experiences of sexuality in Cape Town.

Today, Dr. Kylie Marais is a feminist anthropologist, writer and researcher working to make academic research more accessible and relatable. Her work explores gender, sexuality, embodiment, identity and the ways culture, history and inequality shape our experiences.

She recently launched With Pleasure, a publication where she shares research reflections, insights and stories on women's sexuality creating another way for her work to reach people beyond academic spaces.

For Kylie, leadership has also been about what happens beyond her own achievements. She sees knowledge as something to be shared and opportunities as something to be extended. Within her family, she has become a role model for younger relatives who now see higher education as an achievable goal. Within her research, she supports others and encourages collaboration and inclusivity.

Her understanding of leadership has been shaped by the values she developed through MAD.

What began as an investment in one young person's education has become a career dedicated to asking difficult questions, sharing knowledge and creating space for others to find their own voices.

💚🤗 Our Heart-Held Icon Project featured artist this week is Anton Smit, who received a bespoke Heart-Held Icon sculpture and transformed it into a powerful reflection on love, creation, humanity and our shared sense of belonging.

Titled Song of the Soul, the sculpture celebrates the divine love from which humanity was created. At the centre of the work, two human faces emerge from the heart, symbolising the profound connection between the human spirit and the love that brought us into being.

The work speaks to the belief that every human life carries within it a divine spark — a soul born from love, filled with dignity, purpose and the potential to become. The heart becomes a vessel of creation, while the two faces represent humanity itself: different yet connected, each carrying a unique expression of the same source of love.

Ultimately, Song of the Soul is a reminder of our shared origin and shared humanity — that beneath all our differences, we are connected by a greater story of love, creation and belonging.

Titled One Song, Many Voices, the sculpture reflects how the anthems of nations rise like echoes carried on the same wind, while the world map reminds us that every border is drawn upon a single earth. Each country has its own rhythm, language and soul, adding a unique note to humanity’s shared song.

At the heart of the work is the belief that our differences should not divide us, but enrich the collective story of humanity. Every culture carries its own traditions, experiences and identity, yet we remain connected by the same world we share.

Travel becomes a powerful metaphor for this connection. It creates a bridge between strangers, encouraging us to replace fear with curiosity, difference with understanding and distance with compassion. By discovering one another’s stories, we begin to appreciate that the world does not ask us to be the same — only that we journey together.

💚🤗 Our Heart-Held Icon Project featured icon this week is Neil Sandilands, who received a bespoke Heart-Held Icon sculpture and transformed it into a deeply personal work of art that explores identity, memory, creativity and the many pieces that shape a life.

Titled ’n Stukkie Frikkie, the sculpture brings together found and repurposed materials, including driftwood from Onrus, fynbos from the Overstrand, used guitar strings, electrical fittings, musical notation and hundreds of miniature photographs drawn from Neil’s own 51-year journey through life, music, theatre, television and film. Each element represents a fragment of experience, brought together to create something that is both intricate and deeply human.

The sculpture explores the idea of holding things together. The visible joins, repairs and imperfections are intentionally left exposed, while the guitar strings wrapped around the hands suggest music, connection, restraint and repair. When the viewer switches on the lamp, the heart casts a striking shadow, creating a second artwork and reminding us that beneath all the experiences, memories and details that shape us, there is still something simple and powerful at our centre.

Inspired by the landscape of the Overstrand and Neil’s own life story, ’n Stukkie Frikkie celebrates individuality, resilience and the beauty of embracing all the pieces that make us who we are.

An Opportunity That Became a Career 🙌🏼🎓

For Cliriska Hoffman, agriculture is about more than what comes out of the soil. It is about the land, biodiversity, communities and the future of farming.

MAD Leadership Foundation funded her Bachelor of Agriculture degree and today, Cliriska works as an Environmental Auditor across Southern Africa, alongside farmers and producers working to provide food while protecting the natural resources that future generations will depend on.

Her approach is practical. Every audit is an opportunity to help producers strengthen environmental management systems, implement Good Agricultural Practices and consider sustainability as an investment in the future, not just a compliance requirement.

The women Cliriska encounters in agriculture have also become an important source of inspiration. She has seen women working as farm owners, managers, technical specialists and farm workers, bringing knowledge, resilience and care to the sector. She is especially encouraged by young women who are embracing innovation and demonstrating that productive farming and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.

Cliriska is continuing her own learning while completing her Master's degree.
