Born to be Free

Born to be Free Born To Be Free is an Non-profit organization that looks to promote youth development in South Africa This is then the responsibility of the born free.

Our Story:

South Africa has made great strides since the first democratic election in a short period of time, and as a result it is revered as an example of an inspiring transition from the oppression of apartheid to the freedom of democracy. The transition, however, also unleashed hope, and with hope came new expectations. Even after two decades of freedom, some of these expectations have not be

en met. The first ten years of this transition for South Africa included changes in the economy, government, agriculture, media, criminal justice system, delivery of critical services such as water and health care, race relations, institutions of the state and education system, big business and even sport, as well as in the thinking and beliefs of ordinary people. Transformation then became the main objective of a post-apartheid South Africa. This involved changing the appearance, content, orientation and direction of the state, society and economy that the country had inherited from the apartheid period. This process is still ongoing and for it to happen, new and innovative ways must be introduced that will have a positive influence on the country and its leaders. A born free is a child that was born after 1994, a child born into the new South Africa, born into a South Africa that does not shackle and deprive people of their rights based on colour or gender. In today’s South Africa the born free has a different battle to fight; we fight to ensure that the principles of the Freedom charter, as adopted by the Congress of the People in Kliptown (26 June 1955), are up- held and used as a mechanism to hold our leaders accountable. The passage below is an excerpt from the Freedom Charter; it outlines some of the principles that we as Born Free would like to uphold. We, the People of South Africa, declare for all our country and the world to know:

‘That South Africa belongs to all who live in it, black and white, and that no government can justly claim authority unless it is based on the will of all the people;

That our people have been robbed of their birthright to land, liberty and peace by a form of government founded on injustice and inequality;

That our country will never be prosperous or free until all our people live in brotherhood, enjoying equal rights and opportunities;

That only a democratic state, based on the will of all the people, can secure to all their birthright without distinction of colour, race, sex or belief;

And therefore, we, the people of South Africa, black and white together as equals, countrymen and brothers adopt this Freedom Charter;

And we pledge ourselves to strive together, sparing neither strength nor courage, until the democratic changes here set out have been won.’

The Freedom charter paved the road that South Africa is slowly moving along, and notes that change is not of a specific colour or gender and cannot be limited by the constraints of one’s age. The development of the youth cannot be left solely to the elected political leaders of the Country and as young South Africans we all have a role to play in ensuring that the journey towards a South Africa that is seen as the leaders of Africa, leaders of youth development and involvement is a journey that we are prepared for.

In two weeks time we will be teaching a new group of students and we are excited to start our Saturday School classes. We are excited to continue our great relationship with Sunderland Primary.

We will continue to educate young children about the importance of technology and how it will shape their lives in the near future.

The Covid Pandemic has been a major blow to a lot of people, companies and communities. We must still prepare the current primary school children, who we want to be the future leaders of this country, and we want to equip them with the skills.

Get in touch with us and we look forward to our first class of the year, on the 10th of April.

We have some exciting news!

Born To Be Free Saturday classes are coming back to Sunderland Primary School. We were all affected by the Covid Pandemic and as a result it was difficult to get the green light to have our Saturday computer classes.

We have finally gotten permission to start on the 4th of April. Our classes will be limited to twenty children and we will follow all the strict Covid regulations such as temperature checks, social distancing. The health and safety of the children comes first and we will make sure we will create a safe learning environment for the children.

Reach out to us if you know of schools that
would like to work with Born To Be Free.

Let’s keep preparing and mentoring the leaders of the future.

Kind Regards

To all the parents, students, teachers and volunteers, we want you to know that we are constantly checking with the Department of Education and the various schools we work with regarding the restarting of the academic year.

It has been a very difficult few months and children have lost some crucial months regarding their education. Next week we will be putting up links of educational websites that can help children who have access to internet through their electronic devices they have access to at home. These websites will hopefully help to keep children active and to keep them ready for the reopening of schools.

We look forward to updating you next week.
We hope that all of you are safe and well during this very difficult time.

Kind Regards

Hello to everyone and we hope you are having a productive year so far. Today will be the annual State Of The Nation Addresss (SONA), where our President, Cyril Ramaphosa will address the nation on the governments plans for the next year.

We are eager to hear about how the government plans to deal with the education issues in the country. As a NPO focused on education, we want to know the plans for early child development and the improvement of infrastructure at schools in underprivileged areas. We would also like to engage with how the government looks to change our current education system, to ensure that the young children we work with have proper opportunities for employment during the 4th industrial revolution.

For now we are proud to announce that we have added twenty computers to Sunderland Primary in Maitland and on Saturday the 15th of September, WE WILL START SATURDAY SCHOOL.

Feel free to inbox us if you have any questions or if you want to get involved.

All the Best

Happy Holidays to everyone and We hope you are having a great “ Day of Reconciliation”. We have had a great year and we will share with you our initiative for this December “ Giving and Encouraging Random Acts of Kindness”.

From the first of December until the 25th of December we will be volunteering and giving back to people who need it and we encourage our followers to do the same. There will be more pictures updated, but one that sticks out is when a group of us bought toiletries and food for people who had been removed from their homes in Observatory. We are fortunate enough to have these things daily, but to other people it means more than you can imagine!

We hope you all have a good holiday, get rest and continue to follow our growth and progress and we thank everyone who continues to believe in our values and vision.

Wishing you all the best

Good Morning to all of our followers. We are entering the Fourth Term of school and will be back to our Saturday Classes this coming weekend.

As we know the Fourth Term is cramped and exams are coming up, we will make sure to adapt our lessons to make sure we still teach the children properly and they can benefit from our classes.

Thank you for your continued support and we hope to see a good turnout this weekend.

Thank you to Water in a Box for sponsoring the water for this weekends Saturday classes. We are trying to educate primary school children about computers, but also about moving away from using plastic and buying environmentally friendly products.

05/07/2019

Happy Friday everyone and we hope the teachers, children and of course The Parents had a good holiday and well deserved rest. Saturday Classes will be started during the second week of the school term and we are very excited to continue to work for our communities.

We will also be teaching about the environment and the importance to recycle and limit the use of plastic. Saving our environment is just as important as teaching children how to use computers.

Get the pupils ready, get the teachers ready as we are ready to what we do best.

Kind Regards

We would like to wish all the mothers who have supported our cause and who have raised young girls and young boys who attend our classes, A lovely and thankful Happy Mother’s Day.

There’s a great African phrase “ Wathint Abafazi Wathint Imbokodo” which means “ you strike women you are striking a rock”. Thank you for all the women who have raised us and have been strong just to make sure we have have a better life.

Greeting to all of our followers and supporters and we wish you a Happy Easter Weekend.

This past weekend was a major achievement for our organization as we opened a second computer room at Sunderland Primary School in Maitland, Cape Town and exposes some children to their first opportunity ever to use a computer. We also provided food and beverage for an organization in Hout Bay, that teaches children arts and crafts on Saturday’s.

Providing food and other logistics were always going to be a challenge for us, but our friends and other volunteers helped us to provide food and beverage for over 100 children this past Saturday. We thank everyone that helped us to deliver our services as promised and we would like to see the South African youth more involved in projects like this.
