Abbeyfield is a national non-profit organisation championing the needs of elderly persons across South Africa. Abbeyfield homes are not Old Age Homes in the traditional sense; we provide accommodation within the security and companionship of small households. This is an opportune alternative to the traditional institutionalization of seniors. Abbeyfield has a very strict policy of non-discriminati

on against anyone regardless of their race, creed, colour, s*x, religion, s*xual orientation, gender identity, marital status, or socio-economic status.

• We believe in supporting independent living so that our elderly live a fulfilled and purposeful life and continue to make a positive and meaningful contribution to society. Residents are encouraged to pursue hobbies and participate in sporting activities.

• We aim to combat loneliness and isolation, and to contribute towards the dignity, safety, and security of senior citizens.

• We believe that through collaboration much can be achieved to ensure that residents have the experience of a home away from home in an Abbeyfield house.

• We believe in making time for older people. For us, that means continuous engagement with our residents, making time to chat, listen and learn, without worry of time pressure. Our houses are located within communities to enhance the lives of our residents. To this end, we endeavour to connect our residents to their local communities through social events, excursions, and activities that everyone can enjoy. Typically, our houses are in communities where there is easy access to amenities, transport, and places of worship. Residents have their own rooms which may or may not have an en suite, but residents share a communal kitchen, living and ablution areas. Each house operates as a self-care entity, and residents have a shared responsibility for the general running of the house. Residents are expected to shop and cook for themselves and to clean their own rooms. Ideally, our homes are managed by a small committee consisting mostly of volunteers from the community who offer their time, skills, and expertise to ensure the continued well-being and quality of life of our residents. Abbeyfield is committed to the upliftment of senior citizens and will continue to contribute to the alleviation of the overall housing challenge for elderly citizens. We will continue to pursue development of the Abbeyfield model in previously disadvantaged areas.
