Abbeyfield is a national non-profit organisation championing the needs of elderly persons across South Africa. Abbeyfield homes are not Old Age Homes in the traditional sense; we provide accommodation within the security and companionship of small households. This is an opportune alternative to the traditional institutionalization of seniors. Abbeyfield has a very strict policy of non-discriminati

on against anyone regardless of their race, creed, colour, s*x, religion, s*xual orientation, gender identity, marital status, or socio-economic status.

• We believe in supporting independent living so that our elderly live a fulfilled and purposeful life and continue to make a positive and meaningful contribution to society. Residents are encouraged to pursue hobbies and participate in sporting activities.

• We aim to combat loneliness and isolation, and to contribute towards the dignity, safety, and security of senior citizens.

• We believe that through collaboration much can be achieved to ensure that residents have the experience of a home away from home in an Abbeyfield house.

• We believe in making time for older people. For us, that means continuous engagement with our residents, making time to chat, listen and learn, without worry of time pressure. Our houses are located within communities to enhance the lives of our residents. To this end, we endeavour to connect our residents to their local communities through social events, excursions, and activities that everyone can enjoy. Typically, our houses are in communities where there is easy access to amenities, transport, and places of worship. Residents have their own rooms which may or may not have an en suite, but residents share a communal kitchen, living and ablution areas. Each house operates as a self-care entity, and residents have a shared responsibility for the general running of the house. Residents are expected to shop and cook for themselves and to clean their own rooms. Ideally, our homes are managed by a small committee consisting mostly of volunteers from the community who offer their time, skills, and expertise to ensure the continued well-being and quality of life of our residents. Abbeyfield is committed to the upliftment of senior citizens and will continue to contribute to the alleviation of the overall housing challenge for elderly citizens. We will continue to pursue development of the Abbeyfield model in previously disadvantaged areas.

A beautiful community job done by all at Abbeyfield Plumstead house Bethany Lodge. Everyone worked together big and small jobs. A special thanks to Braam who designed and measured everything. It is so special when everyone helped. A job well done.

These are the words from our resident Grace as they reached completion on their project. We at Abbeyfield could not be more proud of these lovely residents. They are continuing to make their house beautiful and it needs a lot of work.

If you can support them in anyway please contact us on 021 671 6535. Wishing everyone a blessed and peaceful day.

It is with sad hearts and minds that we have to say that our dear resident Ms Bridget Williams from Bethany House in Plumstead passed away in hospital in the early hours of Monday morning. Bridget was first admitted to our Sutherland House in Rondebosch and was transferred to Plumstead when we closed Sutherland House. She was always willing to assist us and stayed working all her life.
She will be missed by all who knew her and we send our utmost condolences to all her family and friends. Rest in Peace Bridget you will be missed by us all at Abbeyfield SA.

Our Abbeyfield house in Wellington form part of this group. They have so much fun together😁 🔥 Wellington Bejaardesorg se Jaarlikse Braai Dag 2026 🔥

Ouderdom is beslis net ’n nommer! ❤️

However, alas we have other issues too. I would like to give a shout out 🙌to Mr Bradley Britz, of J&B Burglar Proofing, for coming to assist us with new burglar bars at our Pelican Park House after an attempted burglary. Security is very important for our residents and we do every thing we can to keep them secure. Mr Britz thank you for your wonderful work with us. 🙂

Shoprite Checkers donated a voucher to our Pelican Park home and the pictures below are of our intrepid resident Jennifer, who is the health and safety officer there, splitting out the food purchases for each resident in the house.
