1 BILLION PLASTIC PELLETS IN THE SEA: DO YOU KNOW WHAT NURDLES ARE?

A recent maritime accident in the Port of Tyne, UK, spilled around 25 tons of plastic pellets into the water.

Despite measuring only 1 to 5 mm, these small spheres of synthetic raw material pose a monumental risk less than 5 km from key seabird reserves.

Why are they so dangerous to the coastal ecosystem?

🚫 Sponge effect: They are not toxic on their own, but they rapidly absorb toxins and pollutants present in seawater.

🚫 Lethal confusion: Due to their size and appearance, marine life and seabirds easily mistake them for food.

🚫 Entry into the food web: When ingested, they block animals' digestive systems and transfer accumulated chemicals through the food chain.

This disaster reminds us that plastic pollution doesn't just happen when we discard a product, but right from the production and transport chain.

At TAF, we support the cleanup efforts carried out by the authorities and emphasize the urgent need for stricter maritime transport regulations to prevent these catastrophes.

Doing good is always a good thing.

Beach clean-ups, river clean-ups, community events—they bring people together and remove waste from nature. But if we’re honest, not much has changed when it comes to the amount of plastic entering our environment.

In fact, the problem is getting worse. So are clean-ups really solving the issue? Or do they mainly help us feel like we’re part of the solution while the source of the problem continues unchecked?

I believe education is where real change begins. Too many people still see plastic pollution as someone else’s problem. The reality is that plastic doesn’t stay where it’s thrown away. Like water, it finds its way everywhere—into our rivers, ocean, soil, food, and ultimately into our bodies.

Instead of only cleaning up the mess, we need to focus on preventing it. We need to understand the impact of plastic waste, choose better alternatives where possible, and reduce our dependence on single-use plastics.

The most effective waste is the waste that never gets created in the first place. So join us - Be part of the solution!

⛵ 7 DAYS AMONG NATURE, WHALES, AND ACTIVE CONSERVATION

Some journeys transform our perspective, and the "Hope Expedition" aboard the beautiful sailboat Tilvera is one of them.

Marine biologist Belén García Ovide, her partner and team offering unforgettable expeditions to Spitsbergen, Greenland, and around Iceland’s Arctic Circle on their vessel Tilvera.

Ocean Mission, an NGO founded also by Belen was one of TAF’s generous sponsors at our gala, where they donated a Hope Expedition.

I had the privilege of joining the winner on this journey, and I was deeply impressed by the richness and diversity of the programme.

The experience is a journey of profound reconnection: 3 days on land: Beach cleanups, educational talks, birdwatching, and meditation to connect with the environment.

4 days at sea: Sailing to remote islands in the Arctic Circle, observing whales, dolphins, and puffins. It is an exceptional expedition that we wholeheartedly recommend to anyone who wants to experience science and conservation firsthand.

🐋 NOISE IS SILENCING OUR OCEAN

The ocean are home to the planet's most majestic giants. Yet, beneath the surface of global waters, an invisible crisis is unfolding that threatens their survival.

Constant traffic from the fishing industry, large cargo ships, cruise liners and bigger boats generates deafening underwater noise. For whales and dolphins, sound is everything: they rely on it to navigate, feed, and communicate.

This constant global acoustic bombardment causes:

📍 Mass disorientation among cetacean families.

📍 A loss of echolocation capabilities and servere hearing damages.

📍 Severe panic that drives them to flee into shallow waters, leading to tragic strandings on coasts around the world.

We cannot allow global trade to silence the song of the whales. At TAF - The Animal Fund, we advocate for the implementation of quiet navigation technologies and the redesign of critical shipping routes.

Protecting their home means ensuring the balance of our blue planet.

🌊 BELÉN, THE MARINE BIOLOGIST WHO TURNED A DREAM INTO SCIENCE

Seeing firsthand initiatives that transform a love for the ocean into tangible actions is what drives us forward.

Today, we want to recognize the extraordinary work of Ocean Mission and its Tilvera expedition—a project that embodies a passion for marine science, education, and exploration in Iceland.

The impact of their work is immense: They collect water and plankton samples for scientific research. They organize active beach cleanups. They educate communities about the impact of microplastics on cetaceans.

Our founder, Berit Legrand, met Ocean Mission’s founder—marine biologist Belén García Ovide—back in 2016. 🌊

Although life took them on different paths, they reconnected years later, only to find their shared passion for the ocean was stronger than ever.

Now, Berit is incredibly proud to be part of this latest expedition side by side with her. It is a true privilege to see how Belén's vision has grown into this beacon of hope for the Arctic. 🐋❄️

THE PLASTIC POLLUTION CRISIS DOESN’T END IN THE OCEAN—IT COMES BACK TO US

Plastic pollution is devastating marine life, but it doesn’t stop there. Every piece of plastic that enters the ocean slowly breaks down into microscopic particles. Whales, dolphins, fish, and countless other marine species mistake these particles for food, causing harm throughout the marine ecosystem.

But the story doesn’t end beneath the waves. Those same microplastics and nanoplastics move through the food chain, contaminate our water, and are now being found in the human body.

Scientific research continues to reveal that we are exposed through the food we eat, the water we drink, and the air we breathe. This is no longer only an environmental crisis—it’s a human health crisis too.

📍 An estimated 87% of tap water samples tested globally have contained microplastics, making our exposure constant.
📍 Research suggests these microscopic particles may contribute to inflammation, oxidative stress, disruption of normal cellular function, and increased cardiovascular health risks.

Scientists are continuing to investigate their full impact on human health. The health of our ocean and the health of humanity are inseparable. When we protect whales, dolphins, fish, and the marine environment, we are also protecting ourselves. The plastic we allow into our ocean doesn’t disappear—it returns to us.
