When whales breathe, they expel air with such force that the condensed vapor reaches up to approximately 3 meters high. 🐳🐳
The speed of their exhalation is very high with a power that comes from their large lungs that have the capacity to contain thousands of liters of oxygen. 😯
And here comes the “smelly secret” 🤣🤭: The smell is sharp and overpowering, almost tangible on the tongue — a foul blend of rot and salt, like a mingling of flatulence and fish.
It’s the stench of hundreds of gallons of air expelled from its lungs, tainted with the sour fumes of half-digested krill — hundreds of pounds of these slow-fermenting crustaceans stewing in its stomach🐟🤢

Meet Scarlet, a marine biologist and researcher from Baja California. She shares why gray whales migrate to the lagoons and how her team works to protect them!
🐋 While whale watching is possible year-round, the peak season in Baja runs from January to March. However, gray whales can typically be spotted along the Baja Peninsula from late December through April.
🐋 Gray whales give birth and nurse their young in just three locations, all off the Baja Peninsula: San Ignacio Lagoon, Magdalena Bay, and Laguna Ojo de Liebre (also known as Scammon’s Lagoon). These sheltered waters provide a safe haven, free from predators, for birthing, nursing, and mating.

🐋Dorjee explains how they can research the gray whales’ population in this Laguna, whether the whales return with their calves or not and how the climate affects their migration routes !
🐋The migration of gray whales are fascinating as this particular species every year undertake one of the longest migrations of any mammal, traveling minimum 12,000 miles round-trip from their feeding grounds in the Arctic to calve and breed in the Baja lagoons, and then back again.
